Decent production tutorials?
Basically I'm looking for some education (would prefer vids but reading is cool) on production.
So far all I come across when I scour the internet is really basic stuff. (e.g drag the kick drum sample onto steps 1 + 3, add snare)
I want something that's going to help me develop synthesis skills, arrangement, songwriting etc. (Not too fussed about mixdown tutorials etc) Also it may help if it's from a different genre, I love seeing how sounds from other styles are made.
Has anybody come across like this recently? any recommendations?

Re: Decent production tutorials?
Its true, there's tons of beginner info out there but not much past that....
It really helps to understand a bit of the science behind it like waves, superposition, interference, frequency spectrum etc., and you can get all that info conveniently off of wikipedia! haha.
soundonsound.com also has tons of great tutorials... Look in their article section, you'll be blown away by the depth of some of their tutorials. They even go so far as to teach you some of the math behind FM synthesis. Pretty cool stuff.
As for arrangement... The only way to really do that is to listen to other people's tracks and analyze them. Sometimes I grab a piece of paper and I'll write down where elements come in and out, or I'll use graph paper and make a visual representation of the song.
dodgeandfuskitv is a great youtube channel, there's lots of good stuff on there, including arrangement. Also check out mixpanmasterclasses on youtube, they've re-upped the rusko masterclass, the reso one and a few others. Super helpful.
If you're really interested in the limits of sound design you should start listening to Boards of Canada and read some of their interviews (on bocpages.org)... They're doing some really creative stuff involving old hi-fi tricks with tape recorders, and methods used in really early electroacoustic music. And their arrangement will mindfuck you. Listen to Peacock Tail and try to count it out hehehe...
Hope that helped... That first track in your sig is huge, can't imagine what you'll come up with after a little more reading/learning.

Re: Decent production tutorials?
Point Blank and Dubspot are worth subscribing to on youtube, they come out with some interesting tutorials every now and then.
It is hard to find advanced tutorials, most seem to start out explaining the basics like we've never used a daw before, then progress to show us the "secret" of sidechaining. So i don't watch many these days, and tend to be a bit more selective as it does get boring.

Re: Decent production tutorials?
Your best bet is masterclasses. I've yet to find anyone who really goes into anything 'advanced' that isn't complete shit. The guys making sick tunes aren't bothered with making 1hr tutorials on how they arrange, write, designs sounds for their tracks because you can't really teach that like you can teach someone how to make a sound, mix etc. If you want something outside of the genre (which I highly recommend) check out Future Musics's youtube channel, they have a ton of masterclasses from house/techno/trance guys. The Sean Tyas one where he builds a remix is really great:
The Chris Lake vid is good as well:
Also check out this Receptor vid where he builds up a tune, might be a little closer to what you're looking for as he's starting from scratch rather than rehashing a completed track.

Re: Decent production tutorials?
what do you guys want out of an advanced tutorial? ie: i'm doing a series on modulation currently and the first 4 eps are going to be semi basic with a lil advanced tossed in with the 5th one being advanced stuff aka using all those basics you learned
Re: Decent production tutorials?
Re-sampling audio to thicken using reverb, distortion, ect. Would be cool. Also how to use parallel compression in a track, and the benefits of this technique.
People talk about this stuff all the time but i have never seen a video that goes into it. I feel like these were the hardest concepts for me to grasp at first, and when people throw around the term you dont want to be THAT GUY ( dont want to be a noob, but what does XXXXXX mean? ) =P

My advice is too have a lurk about some forums where it's generally older heads posting. Some of the best things I've read have been on techno forums, usually down to there being a bit of an older user-ship, which more than usually means they've been doing it for years so your getting the voice of experience rather than all these littluns chatting breeze. I'm too tired out (just done a massive assignment + recently erased all my bookmarks) to get links but I'd suggest checking some forums with a more mature user-ship, sure to pick up something new. Excuse the vagueness i'm beat

Re: Decent production tutorials?
so far whats been helping me the most, is just researching on here, the dodge and fuski tuts on youtube are awesome, and if you have massive, check out the 3 hour class posted on top, if you dont know how to use it or what anything does, that will help a lot, personally, i just got the very basics down, found out what everything else i was trying to do was called, and googled or youtubed it until i found a good link

The masterclasses are great. Another thing to try would be either macprovideo.com or groove3.com. They charge 25-30 bucks USD a month and you have unlimited access to all of their videos. They cover a wide variety of DAWs, plugins, and even music theory. Hope this helps!
