It's a SF post apocalyptic classic and was pretty interesting to read.

a book about a group of people who set off to find a mountain bigger than any mountain in the world. the reason nobody has found the mountain is because light curves around it. you have to be at a certain place at a certain time to access it. otherwise, it doesnt exist. really mental book, really short but amazing

by Jerry A. Coyne

A really interesting look into evolution. I managed to gather a lot of useful information from Coyne's book. It's definitely written in a really accessible way, filled with a lot of examples and notes.

Can anyone recommend any books about the early days of sound system culture or the Rastafari movement?

Something ive been meaning to learn about for time, but never bothered. Figured this would be the best place to ask.

Oh and just finished reading the Watchmen after years of putting it off, christ knows why... An unbelievable read.

Bass Culture - When Reggae Was King by Lloyd Bradley

Been recommended in this thread a few times, saw it in the library and grabbed it. Really really excellent, from ska and rocksteady through reggae and dub, all up to the start of dancehall, in detail but still entertaining. Not just about the music but the surrounding culture, and you get a feel for how reggae is more than music, its entirely Jamaican but made up of so many influences. I think there's a chapter on Rastafari as a movement and religion as well as influence on the sound. Brilliant for recommending tunes, artists, labels and systems as well.

I think I posted it up when I finished it a few weeks ago - great read and essential stuff for anyone interested in this culture. Really good book.

Agreed - finished Hornets Nest the other week, had to re-read the last 50 pages, the pace was ridiculous.
