Good first buy mic for field recording?

Gonna be using it for vocals, drums and miscellaneous stuff. So it needs to be able to pick up a good range of db. All I'm looking for is to get clean quality recordings to use in my productions Looking to spend around £70, however if that seems like too small for something like this I can go to about £150. No experience with buying microphones before so any help would be appreciated

I bought a zoom h1. cheap but gives decent result. easy to carry around and use.

Search here for recorders, we've discussed them a lot. I still recommend Zoom H4n, but if it's too pricey the H4 is cheaper and is about 95% the same except not as durable, still way more durable than the other Zooms. I've posted up some tips on how to get the cleanest sound from them if you quick search.

The newer Tascam DR-07 MKll is also very very nice! The mics flip out into A/B position from X/Y like some Star Trek phaser thing. Lacks TRS/XLR inputs though.

I would definitely recommend the Zoom series as well. I have an H2 - very good sound for the price, option for 4 mic surround recording, and also has an input to use other mics as well (so you can use it as a mini digi recorder).

I've got a Tascam DR 05 or 07...forget which..not the MKII... really high quality...does the job and then some. Really clean, crisp recordings. Done lots of recording ambiance and "home percussion" pots and pans...breaking things etc...usually I only have to do normal EQ/filtering as with an sample.

I've ordered a tascam dr-05 but it hasn't arrived yet. a friend has the zoom h1. it's nice and small but didn't look or feel like it can survive falling.

yeah its incredibly light and plasticky. also it captures a lot of sound all around, so if you hear something, get close to it to record you`ll still have a lot of stuff recorded around you. still the price is silly...
