yup, it's absolutely all in the name. unfortunately most of us don't have the shear brilliance, talent, and insight to create a name as godly as skrilz or the almighty maus. so all we can do is just make music instead, that is shitty because we can't think of cool names. and it is a tragedy that we will never be famous and have teenagers on MDMA shouting our names at us. if only, if only! if only i could come up with a NAME! wish my music didn't have to rely on my musical ability, it's so haaard

Edit: Same with Loefah or Burial, though.

I've always had this opinion about early Prodigy tunes. They're amazing, but if they were released today (or indeed, posted in the Dubs board) would people actually think they're amazing or would they just get comments along the lines of "Sort your mixdown out"

well c'mon. that goes for anything old. especially dance music. old dance music often sounds atrocious when compared to today. but it still has it's charm, it's place in history, and it influenced all that came after it. so it's inseparable from its time and place, otherwise nothing makes any sense.
yeah, if the beatles put out "i wanna hold your hand," right now.. people would think, that's childish and it sounds shit. yet 90% of american and european music is in some way influenced by the beatles.

Yeah, but what he's saying is... I think. Music is music and legacy is legacy. All music should be judged by is how great you think it sounds. If something's shitty it should be considered shitty, regardless of the circumstances. To give the Prodigy a pass for something you owuldn't give a modern producer a pass over is just unfair to modern producers. I judge tunes by how much I enjoy them, not by things that have nothing to do with the music that society tells me are important. And wub kinda just highlighted how pointless judging things by their mixdown is for example. Big tunes are big tunes.

I don't like the Beatles, personally. And I'll judge old things for being bad as well. Of course, my taste is shaped by the modern prevailing culture, but I don't see why my 'modern bias' is bad whereas an 'old bias' is good. 'Well, sure it SUCKS but things used to suck, so I'll listen to it'

welll........ yeah..... isn't that what i was saying? the beatles sound great to me because of the charm of their music, but they were just an example of something that is incredibly influential an entire generations (and ours as well) yet would be called "poorly mixed" today. nowhere did i say i like things because others say i should.
music didn't used to suck.... if you think that then i would have to question your musicianship. music has never 'sucked.' it's the equipment they made it on that was not as advanced as it is today. and the loudness war was not at the stage it is today. to today's listener... stuff from the 60s might sound weak because they didn't compress everything to the limits they do today, and EQ it digitally. so yes, if you put it out today, it would sound weak compared to everything else coming out, and producers would comment on that. has nothing to do with the actual music. if someone were to judge music more on the mixing than the actual music, i would also question their musicianship

and if you actually think music from back then was worse, it just means you have no interest in, or appreciation for the evolution of musical trends and the history of our society. just my opinion.

I love lots of music from the 60s/70s, but I never understood the hype around The Beatles. Never heard anything I particularly liked. I wouldn't say it's poorly mixed though. I wish I could get mixes to sound like it was from that era.

:a: not hype. Don't forget that they were pop and a lot of their song writing remains 100x more imaginative than most pop or underground music toady.

Not the negative definition of 'hype', I just mean the general huge praise people have for it. Any faves to recommend? I listen to r&b styles from that era... reggae, dub, jazz, 50s rock. Just couldn't get into the Beatles stuff I've heard besides Come Together, mostly because it reminds me of Chuck Berry. I think they even got sued for it, that was happening to a lot of original writers back then who didn't get credit (similar happened with Beach Boys and Elvis who I also don't rate). Funny though because every time I mention I'm not a fan, people almost get offended haha. Not like I hate them or anything though.

I think it's more like, if say someone like Mala made a really shitty tune people would say "well it's not his best work" but they'd still have massive respect for him, whereas if you or I made that tune, people would write us off as shitty producers. It seems perfectly fair to me, because someone like Mala has made enough amazing music that he's earned the right to get by with one or two shit tunes...although he hasn't made any bad tunes yet!

Yeah, I am seriously offended :) and too broad to recommend anything.

Maybe up your alley (a track off an album by the biggest pop band in the world, at the time):

a shit tune is a shit tune and should be judged as such. Mala shouldn't get a 'pass' for making a shit tune because his other tracks are good. If the track sucks, it sucks, and we should all be able to say so. Just like people shouldn't worship a deadmau5 tune just because deadmau5 made it. However that's not how things work, and name (especially with more commercial music) is 99% of it.

i think the worst is tricking people without any taste of their own into liking your music and then kill the rest of their braincells with your slowly decreasing music while the mixdown goes to 0 db in every single fucking freq but below 60

Of coarse you are going to get views of fans that like zeds dead, and hey maybe some of the fans like the song....... But that does not mean that they made

Zeds dead white satin, eyes on fire, or any of the other songs people liked
And maybe those people liked those songs so much that they remembered Zeds dead

Which is why that Faker got views in the first place.
who the fuck is zeds dead
Zeds Dead is actually not to shabby i like them but what do i know

You cant expect every single thing someone does to be the best thing they have ever done, its pretty ridiculous really.

Agreed. Eyez VIP was pretty poor...the fact that Mala made it doesn't change my opinion of the track.
