Muslimgauze was a music project of Bryn Jones from Manchester. A
prolific British ethnic electronica and experimental musician,
influenced by conflicts in the Muslim world with an emphasis on the
Israeli-Palestinian conflict. With over 200 albums and ep’s released
under the Muslimgauze name, Jones was remarkably prolific, but his
mainstream success was limited due in part to his work being issued
mostly in limited editions on small record labels.
Jones first released music in 1982 and his musical output lasted until
1999 with his untimely death.. Muslimgauze music emphasized on pure
synthesis to percussion textures, which grew to encompass acoustic
drum kits, drum machines, assorted ethnic hand percussion and samples.
Record labels Soleilmoon, Staalplaat, and Extreme Records released the
bulk of his material with beautifully packaged limited edition cd and
vinyl.
With a musical range from ethno ambient, hip hop, experimental dub,
techno, tribal and electronica. This musical blend created a totally
original sound which his fans collected his releases fanatically.
Headlining this event will be Shackleton who you can hear draw some
influences from Muslimgauze with his experimental percussive dub
fusion coming into play. Shackleton will be performing a special live
set in respect of the late Bryn Jones. Expect deep hypnotic techno,
tribal percussion, heavy ambient dub soundscapes throughout his set.
Long time producer Bedouin Ascent aka Kingsuk Biswas has been making
music since the late 80’s then into the 90’s he started releases
techno and experimental music on Rising High Records. Later productions
led into Eastern, African, electro and with an experimental twist.
Collaborations over years have been with Talvin Singh, Luke Vibert,
Coldcut, Bill Laswell, Plaid, Mixmaster Morris and Zakir Hussein.
Except a down beat ethno electronica live set from him.
Bradford based The Rootsman will be selecting released and unreleased
material that he recorded with Muslimgauze. The long time reggae,
dancehall and world music producer and selector worked very close with
Bryn Jones on numerous albums and remix projects. Some of these
released on his own Third Eye Music and The Muslimgauze Preservation
Society record labels.
Dj Simon Scott will be playing a strictly Muslimgauze selection and
unreleased remixes. He was responsible along with fellow Subdub /
Exodus promoter Mark Salford to first put on Muslimgauze live in
England back in 1995 in The Wire (formally Café Mex) plus a further
five shows in Leeds up until 1998.
Techno and electronic producer & dj Black Amiga will be performing
live reworks of Muslimgauze. He's well know for his Room 237 parties and
old alias P45 who kept the Leeds underground electronic scene bubbling
bringing some great acts to the city.
