F.Y.I.

Usually if you have enough tunes in your catalog, and there's money to be made out of publishing, then publishing companies are likely to try and contact you...

You CAN set up your own publishing company, but it's not much good without all the contacts established publishing companies have.

If they do approach you, you can usually expect to recieve a reasonably large advance against revenues they will collect on your behalf

You CAN licence recordings for sychronization (movie/tv/video games)
without, but again...it's all about the contacts....or luck

hope this helps you for starters

O.K.?

if your getting played on national / commercial radio then signing up with the PRS will probably be worth your while.

david - i could probably put you in touch with someone about publishing.

right i kinda see

like in a sense having someone else do the work for you, but in return they get a chunk of your royalties

well yes, but they're not usually incredibly greedy ( dependant on contract ) so it's not that bad....plus, if they don't get you any money THEY don't get paid, and you won't owe them either, so It's in their interest to work hard for ya.

PRS and Music Publishing are very different..

PRS = Performing Rights Society... they pay you if your music is played in public, principally on the radio, but in lots of public places, eg in shops on jukeboxes, on TV etc..

Yes - sign up to PRS immediately because they are the ONLY insitution who can collect this money and pay it over to you.. they are random and slow, but it's YOUR money.. so do it..

Music Publishing = all rights too and ownership of your songs

my advise is be very cautious and do not sign a publishing deal unless you are very very clear about the terms...

what's you're doing is signing away/selling the rights/ownership to your songs..

if a reputable Music Publishing company is offering you a handsome financial advance, and you are desperate to give up your day job and take the money, fair enough.. but be aware that the company will then own a (possibly very high) percentage of all rights to your songs.. and your publishing is worth more than your royalites in many cases..

if you are offered a Publishing deal you should definitely consult a music industry lawyer who can explain the terms to you..

there are some very good ones, who, if they believe in you as an artist will advise you for very little when you set out..

hope this is useful..

m/a.. x

How easy is it to set up your own publishing company? It would seem to me that rather than sign away a large percentage of your royalties to a publishing company, that it would be better to control this yourself and then license tracks as and when required.
Hmm....

publishing tracks yourself isn't cheap, I believe there's a fee involved each time, and there isn't really much point unless you're getting your stuff used for synchs i.e. film/advert work and so on. For your average musician on the underground, PRS membership is all you really need to worry about...

I'm not hugely knowledgable on the subject but I'll try & type more when I've gotta sec. :4:

it's just when doing all this PRS stuff, there's loads of bits about publishing. and looking at other dubstep producers stuff registered on there, quite a few have some form of publishing etc. hmmm.

Yeah but you don't need it to collect performance royalties.

Probably the most important point here. As a small indie label owner - If you've got the time, energy and contacts to activiely exploit the publishing of your artists then cool, do it yourself. But be warned it's not that easy getting your artists music played TV and adverts etc. For a start you have to have good contacts in the sync industry. Not only that, i can't image Coki's Tortured as light hearted bed for a shampoo advert. But there is an application for dubstep - games, films (we all know about Digital Mystikz and the Children of Men film) etc. You will just have to be open minded.

If you're artist's are happy for you to hold onto the Publishing then cool, otherwise try and get a deal. Or just register with PRS for the time being and if you're any good, people will start approaching you.
