Start fresh. Instal your necessities. And then do rolling installs when you reach for something and it is not there. Hopefully this way, you'll end up installing only that which you use. I know I have so much detritus. Thing is, you know once a year you're going to reach for a particular Jack Dark plug...

actually really good advice. forcing a fresh install, and only allowing a few saturation/filter vsts to sneak in, actually forced me to experiment in new ways that i probably wouldn't have figured out using my old plugs.

i mean, i'm sure leg doesn't really need any help with techniques though. but really, it does train your brain to stay out of the rut.

Dunno what plugins you have, but a lot of plugins will not only need to be reinstalled, but you might also need to get a new license for your new computer. A lot of them use specific hardware IDs as a form of copy protection, so the same key won't work on a new computer. That doesn't mean buying it again, just going through registering it with the company on a new system. Some software has serials tied to only that hardware ID and won't work if you get a new computer or try to install it elsewhere.

It's never recommended to just switch out a system drive into a new computer unless the hardware and OS are the same (maybe just different RAM/video card at most). It will cause lots of problems down the line. Using it as a secondary/slave drive is fine though.

Welll i'll be switching from 32bit to 64 so either way i'll "need" to install a fresh windows, thats why I was just going to dual boot and probably will just do that.

I don't really use a lot of VSTs anyways. Komplete 6, Addictive Drums, sylenth1, synth1, modern classics freeware bundle, the free bundle with floorfish on it, Glue, Camel Crusher and Sampson channel strip - its only in the last few months I have my reaktor and kontakt set up perfectly (had loadsssssssss of problems for more than a year) but I also need a upgrade desperately haha!

They just don't do installers properly. I don't know what the deal is with them.

Noooooooo shit. Their installers/updates have broken the plugins keeping me from opening projects more than once, and it was a common problem as I found out looking for a fix online. I'm afraid to update their software after that haha.

Also NI are one of the ones who tie their software to hardware IDs, so yeah you'll have to go through the reg again most likely. The others don't afaik except maybe Addictive Drums.

Yeah, I installed a new hd and a new graphix card a while back, messed up some stuffs.

My favorite (in an ironic way) is that when you want to update your ni software, you first have to update the service center. Like the process is laborious enough already working with the service center, now I've got to update your hand holding security software...

I've still got Massive at like 1.14. Think Reaktor is relatively fresh at 5.6 I think it is.

Haven't read through anything but the OP, so...

No, you don't have to reinstall anything. However, the painfully irritating part is that you will always have to boot into whichever workspace you want to use. If you're doing something on your casual-use hdd and want to start producing, you'll have to restart your computer and boot into the other hdd. There is a way around this involving hacking a virtual-machine image, but it's really difficult and I can't find enough information on how exactly it's done.
