I'm in to all eras of hip hop, granted post 2000 is saturated with alot of shit in the charts, but still is hitting it with the likes of Madlib, Count Bass D, MF DOOM etc. Getting back into the electro boombap shit, NEwcleus, stets anyone got any recommendations?

early-mid 90's hip hop forever. it's not a nostalgia thing. it's a music thing. imo, no one has touched premier, dre, bomb squad, pete rock or jdilla in nearly a decade of beats. it's almost as if they opened the door and slammed it shut behind them. mc's keep getting better but where are the beats with soul? where is the rawness? it's like you have to listen to 300 beats that bore you to hell to find 5 that you like.
in 1992, i liked nearly everything coming out.

Aceyalone had the sickest, sickest flow... in 1992. Since then he had been on steady decline, since 2002ish he might as well be a member of Dilated Peoples.

I love 90s hip hop. All the way from Raekwon to Freestyle Fellowship. But I've no time artists who cannot look beyond that aging formula, unable to innovate. 95% of UK hip hop beats are just piss poor faximilies of a 95 pete rock beat. What was fresh then is not fresh now. Like dnb artists today trying to be Source Direct. Even they sounded identical, they've still missing the whole point. How can you be an innovator by copying one. Plus lot those sign up to this mid 90s agenda are the same people that hate on Grime. It's like they dont "get" new music. Maybe a lot of them discovered hip hop in their teens, last decade, and they'd rather reminisce over those memory than engage with the present.

For me, a decent Clipse, Federation or a Juelz Santana track kills almost all of these aging, entropic mid 90s acts. And it's sad watching them slip into irrelevance. But that's where nostalgia and conservatism take you.

i'm failing to see your point. Blatantly, these artists are still putting out new material. And I actually love (or use to) most of the artists on your list. Point is, it's a shame you cant find any newer artists to name. Because your list of "fresh artists" looks like it could have been made 10 years ago.

Maybe that's because all new hip hop artists suck, maybe it's because you and most of this thread fail to engage or appreciate new forms hip hop (hyphy, clipse etc). Either way, it's sad.

i guess that's the crux of it right there.

you could call on rap vs hip hop argument, for validation of the mid 90s paradigm. Most graf artists dont listen to hip hop anymore, and breakers dont break to anything post 95, most turntablists still only play with 90s-orientated records, so maybe hip hop did die in 90s.

doesnt change the fact there's still bare new & exciting rap music coming out in 2007.

Daddek, I really don't like the albums you've pointed out. Certainly not the Clipse. Jay Z or Kanye west over the Clipse anytime.
