yes, for speed/retrigger and pitch changes automation is best, just right click the speed/retrigger knob or pitch change knob and hit "create clip". For mastering just slap on soundgoodizer and multiband compressor and choose from presets. its that simple.

I get it if its for the tempo of the whole song but say for my growls if I want to retrigger them 'isolate' them. How would I go about doing that without creating notes in piano role. How do I automate that.

Just right click it and hit "create automation clip". Boom! problem solved! Absolutely avoid creating notes in the piano roll, its just a mess then.
