Re: Prometheus *massive spoilers*

Post by nowaysj » Fri Jun 15, 2012 9:27 am

Context:

1. Didn't know this was in the works. Didn't know it was(n't) an Alien prequel. Saw a commercial for it, and was like, holy fuck they are just openly biting Alien. :dunce:

2. I don't even really watch movies anymore. Drama is just so weak/uninteresting for me, now. Was kind of psyched for this, just cause the subject matter is interesting, and I also like to look at pretty things. So, was psyched, but had that feeling like yeah this film is going to be complete shit and a total waste of my time.

3. I liked this movie.

4. Despite the fact that I hate just about everything about it. I do like puzzling over the big picture questions the film plays with. But the film... holes doesn't even cover it. Everything that angry Joe guy is saying is true, and at least 10x more. If you think, "what was the most out of place, stupid, hokey element of the film" you'll outdo yourself every few seconds recalling completely illogical, idiotic plot devices, misguided wardrob decisions, what no bras in the future, can only use ace bandages for the boobies, total lack of character in all of the characters. Theron is an ice bitch throughout, gets alone with cap on deck and is like, "what's up dood, wanna fuck?" Cap himself is careless dick, champ, careless dick, champ. All total bullshit to the point that I don't even want to think about the big questions of the film in the context of the film, because they're completely unsupported by any element within the film. Think this should have been a novel, honestly, the ideas don't seem to be filmic.

Pretty much captures the deadpan running in my head in the parking lot after the movie.

Apparently MedPod was for Weyland. But I swear Vickers didn't know he was on the ship?

nah, vickers blatantly knew, that's why she was going "WHAT DID HE SAY TO YOU" to David, cause that was right after David went and had a talk with him

Last good sci-fi film?

Not sure.

Which ones are total rubbish and therefore aren't even up for debate:
Star Trek (2009), Revenge of the Sith (2005), Serenity (2005), Cloverfield (2008), War of the Worlds (2005), I am Legend (2008)

Which ones are up for debate?

Inception (2010): technically sci-fi, visually stunning and vaguely thought provoking at the time of viewing, two years later I only remember it for its appalling sound-track that inspired a list of people to do the same soundtrack over and over again for every movie in its wake. A half decent story, not a classic by any means.

Avatar (2009) : see prometheus: visually stunning movie without any substance what so ever. I didn't finish the movie when I went to watch it. Honestly I hate it, but I can imagine some people liking it. I'll mention it, but had forgotten all about it before trying to think up this list.

The Road (2009) : Personally very disappointed by this one: it's one of my favourite novels, and the movie felt just like the book being narrated: the dialogue wasn't altered and therefore felt a bit awkward translated into a movie. The story was 100% following the book. They had a decent go at trying to recreate the atmosphere from the novel, but all in all it was a disappointment for me. Even lead character Mortensen overdid it, and they put too much importance / dependence on the mother character portrayed by an average Theron. Decent attempt, but not a classic either.

Children of men (2006) : I liked this movie : it had a low budget, had a good story and acting, even had some dubstep in it (lol). But it wasn't die-hard sci-fi enough for me to consider. It was more a sad look at the state of humans, in the future, but also right now as that stuff was happening in some places as the movie was being made. Good movie, not a sci-fi classic though.

Moon (2009) : I personally loved this one but it wasn't a classic either: the story was good and the production was good for such a low budget. But the low budget also limited the possibilities. Also, the ending was rather stupid detracting at least one point from the overall score. A good Sunday night sci-fi movie, but again I fear not a classic. But better than most of the above and die hard sci-fi.

District 9 (2008) : I suppose there's nothing wrong with District 9, but I feel no urge to ever watch it again either. It had too much social commentary and was too humanised as well. Not challenging enough.

Which brings us down to the ninetees I think (I've probably missed loads but just having a quick thought about it). The last classic thus must be:

The Matrix (99) : very much sci-fi and worthy of the title cult movie. One of the few movies I had to see several times in theatres. Though not hard sci-fi (let's admit it, we all love space and aliens), I think this might just be the last classic to have emerged from the genre.

Plenty of good stuff in The Nineties, Eighties and Seventies as we all know.

Fair points, but i'm really dying for that space sci-fi stuff specifically. Avatar was a pile of shit. The Road was too depressing and just all around frustrating... Others were pretty good, especially Moon.

The Matrix definitely does seem like the last good sci-fi classic, I feel like the genre has become too much about appealing to the common denominator, which is why you get movies like Prometheus and Avatar when they could be so much more

Primer (2004) is the last great sci fi I can think of.

Joeki, have you read Blood Meridian? I had to read it all in about 2 days or something, couldn't put it down.

Blood Meridian: I agree McCarthy's masterpiece without a doubt.

Primer was all right, but honestly the mindfucking business is not where it's at for me regarding sci-fi.
The above did get me thinking where Donnie Darko (2001) would stand. I suppose it is sci-fi too. I liked it upon viewing, but mostly remember it for the Joy Division moment. Hmmm.
