Re: Tips on being more creative?
i know there are a lot of aphex fanboys but for me he always seemed more open to not so intelligent music then other big names in idm i couldnt imagine boc together with lets say (any big brostepper or well known band that went from innovative to sell out) on the same stage
Re: Tips on being more creative?
Boards of Canada is one of the more mainstream idm groups.

I guess I wouldn't really know, but here in Chicago it seems to be the only idm anyone ever talks about.

I'm just asking as I never would have classed them as mainstream but I do get how they could be mainstream if they became popular.
I just think the style of music doesn't lend itself to mainstream imo.

Mainstream to me is, like, shit that's played on top 40's radio, so I don't think they're mainstream, but they're definitely not underground either. I'm not sure where I would put them.Electric_Head wrote:I'm just asking as I never would have classed them as mainstream but I do get how they could be mainstream if they became popular.

afx was playing dubstep before it was even called dubstep though, and he released some of the first Plasticman, MRK1, Mystikz etc tunes on his label.BudSpencertron wrote: but yeah they are riding the bandwagon same as aphex playing dubstep
Die Antwoord is funny and obvious trolls so they are cool in my book.

They are actually some of the best compilations along with the Allstars and Tectonic Plates stuff imo.
I've seen him play speedcore and skullstep dnb, and he's also played like 30 minutes of white noise blasting before lol. Definitely known for trolling though yeah.

Do everything the opposite.
Then opposite the 2 and 4 of that.

Re: Tips on being more creative?
Source material will give you no end of ideas.
Listen to shit loads of random music.
Practice sound design like building sounds from the ground up,working out plugin chains.......i find doing this you make stuff by accident that can lead on to really good ideas. My most recent tune i started off making your typical reece that turned into the nastiest sub i have made yet which led into probably the best track i've made so just generally fuck around with a bit of purpose.
Take breaks and do other shit, nothing kills your creativity as much as spending to much time trying to be creative.
Finally love everything you produce and embrace everything you learn, constantly doubt yourself and hate on other peoples work is a great way to make yourself judgemental which in turn will hold you back from just letting go.My best tunes have come about when i'm in my zone headphones on ignoring the world exists,if something doesn't fit i make it fit now where before i constantly struggled with the everything has to be perfect.I believe beauty is born at of chaos, who cares if your beats sound messy or your sound design isn't polished,as long as you enjoy it thats what counts and thats what will make you better.
