not going to read the entire thread...not sure why they made it with so many open ended questions, before having the go ahead for a sequel. been raping the net trying to find answers that don't exist (and may never exist)

Hmmm, that's a hit and miss list.

Some I dealt with on the previous page.
Then there are a few I downright don't agree with: A.I. , Splice, AEON flux, Minority Report, Sunshine and Watchmen are rubbish in my very humble opinion.

Then there's a few that shouldn't even be on the list:

The Prestige (loved that movie), Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind (good, but not hard sci-fi either), Paprika or in fact any animé (again a good movie but should be on a separate list), A Scanner Darkly, Wall-E....

Some good shouts were:

The Host, 28 Days/Weeks later, Solaris (though the movie has nothing on the first by Tarkovsky, or Lern's book for that matter), Time of the wolf (= the road).

There are quite a few in there I haven't even seen yet. I'll dig through those: a decent list but no classics surely.

The Fountain is up there as possibly my favourite film of all time (tied with Scanners and Con Air) but I don't really see it as a sci fi.

I dunno, A Scanner Darkly and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind are two of my favorite films, fictional possibilities of where science could take us are as sci-fi as any film set in space.

You're totally right, I shouldn't distinguish between the deep space shit and earthly sci-fi, but somehow I always end up doing so.

indeed! Copied several times later on (Sunshine, Pandorum, etc.), it was one of the first of its kind and had a pretty plausable sci-fi base for being a deep space splatter horror flick.

The Road was haunting, like it is still standing behind me when I'm at the computer, but, I totally agree that the film itself is slightly mehish.

But the potential paths coming out of the singularity are so diverse... so much potential there. I think the only potentially relevant films would be scifi films, at this point.

As someone said, artistic integrity is gone. Sci-Fi can't be done unless it brings money in the bag right now and that means mainstream access and other features that would appeal to a more general public, like fancy graphix and 3D. Which leaves true sci-fi projects with very low budgets that often result in not meeting the expectations of the true sci-fi crowd, who want to see realism, great graphics too of course, decent acting. See Moon for example: a ridiculously low budget (but still well loved). Bad examples would be Prometheus, AvP,...that list is endless.

Movies like Blade Runner failed at the box office, but slowly generated a cult following and a very large audience later on. In today's industry, that slow process is simply unthinkable.

So technology has democratized music production to a large degree, will tech reach the same point in film, and will this point in time be before the singularity?
