What are DJ's actually doing when...?
Watching the best of Hackney weekend on iPlayer, during Dizzee Rascal's set that their DJ was using vinyl and was almost non stop doing a scratching motion on the right deck. There was no scratching sound and the song wasn't changing or anything, I don't get it, quite often I see DJ's non stop doing stuff to their decks but nothing obvious is happening?

cueing up their next record mate.
Re: What are DJ's actually doing when...?
Ah okay, I guess I never thought of that, 'coz I use Traktor and a midi controller, so cueing up a track only takes a few seconds haha

This made me cringe and give a massive "AWHHHHHS!".
Yeah, just means we're cueing - honestly, you don't need to cue THAT much but it becomes an awful habit which is hard to shake.. I usually cue for about 32 bars before I even want to start the track just because it helps me keep time.

Cueing or faking/acting. Could be either or these days.

Yep. I've stopped doing it now when I mix dubstep.legend4ry wrote:awful habit
It's OK with normal vinyl, but too much cueing with acetate dubplates makes them un-cue-able very quickly.
Re: What are DJ's actually doing when...?

Are you guys saying that you will scratch with the record while you're waiting to drop the record? I would always find the hit I wanted, usually the kick or snare, and then hold it letting the slipmats do their thing until it was time to drop it.
Re: What are DJ's actually doing when...?
Sure but like legendary said, you just scratch that hit back and forth to make sure you didn't slip or to feed your ocd.mks wrote:![]()

I think I used to do that but I found, especially in clubs with a lot of bass where the turntable was still prone to vibrations, that quite often doing this would make the needle bounce out of the groove. Then it was seconds lost when you needed to be precise while re-cue and waiting for the beginning of the next phrase to be able to drop it again.
I found that to hold it and drop it was a better technique on larger systems.

True that! I seem to cue different in clubs than at home.

I'm guessing the best way to learn how to DJ using vynl is to do it?

I don't even cue at home... I just blast gun fingers and yell shatap all the time.legend4ry wrote:mks wrote:I think I used to do that but I found, especially in clubs with a lot of bass where the turntable was still prone to vibrations, that quite often doing this would make the needle bounce out of the groove. There is a certain amount of irony that this thread is on a forum where the genre in question is largely based around a single BPM.
