Dubstep songs structure

Post by Plasmid » Thu Jun 28, 2012 9:07 am

Hey guys,

I wanted to produce a Dubstep song. The intro from the most Dubstep songs are about 27 seconds long and the drop is mostly by 55 seconds. So does Dubstep songs have a structure how long the intro must be or where the Drop must start? If yes can you tell me the structure?

Thanks

The 2 most common structure for intro's in dubstep are:

16 bar intro (this is the one thats around the 25-27 second mark) advantage to this is it gets to the point (the drop) quicker so it's easier for it not to be boring, disadvantage is it doesn't give the DJ a great deal of time to mix it in (literally have to be bringing up the fader straight away to avoid it sounding out of place)

The other common one (which I prefer) is a 32 bar intro (55 seconds or so of intro) this one gives the DJ more time to mix but if you are new to the game it can be harder to make this sound interesting and not just filler.

The rest of structure theory has already been covered here but that should at least get you started on the intro. :W:

Copy & paste this into the address bar;

Code: Select all

That'll give you all threads in the Production forum with the word 'structure' in the title. Some of them are referring to gain structure, but have a look through and see if that gives any help.

Though remember they aren't strict rules, just guidelines. A lot of dubstep drops at 27 seconds too or doesn't 'drop' at all. I'd say as long as it was mixable it's fine, but with a lot of people using Live and Traktor and such, even that is up for debate really as there's all kinds of ways around that. Don't get caught up in the guidelines though and concentrate on the music. Longer intros/outros can always be easily added later if needed.

otherwise
''Dub is drum and bass music. If you want to be academic about it or technical, you can say it's the deep structure of reggae. It's the very skeleton of music.''
(not dubstep, I know, but still a great way to think)
