SoundCloud distortion?

Post by Barka » Sat Jun 30, 2012 3:18 pm

Hey peeps!

I just finished a tune, and uploaded it to soundcloud, and it sounds weirdly distorted and kinda muffled.
Soundcloud

Download it and listen to it on your comp too and you'll see how much better it sounds when not played on soundcloud.

Is the mixdown shitty? Too much sub? Or phasing issues?
It's a rough self master, previously I had Ozone on, and that made it distort even more, now the master channel only has a very-very gentle EQ and Fabfilter PRO-L limiter.
I tried limiting it less, didn't work.

Any ideas?

hm yeah soundcloud tends to cut off some high end plus it lowers the mp3 the tune sounds way cleaner in 320 so only thing i would sy is make the snare maybe a bit more prominent so it hits in soundcloud harder
and some places the sub is a bit loud but it is not that bad in the 320 but maybe soundcloud takes this spots to "destroy" your mix
definitly nice tune man :W:

Soundcloud data compression problem

Post by MandorliMusic » Sat Jun 30, 2012 5:43 pm

Hey all!

I´ve got a problem with nearly every single tune I want to upload to soundcloud. My masters always sound clear and okay in Cubase, iTunes... but as soon as I upload it to soundcloud I´ve got problems in the mid/lows/sub area and it seems to distort. I know that soundcloud processes every tune to 128kbps (I always upload 320s because when you download it, there is no problem with distortion as you download a copy of the original 320 version) but is there any way you can handle that?

this is an example: Soundcloud

Just take a listen to the bass @ 0:55 then you should hear the distortion quite good.

Hope you know what I mean and I´m looking forward reading your suggestions!

cheers Martin

Soundcloud streams in 128 so needless to say a non streamed 320 is going to sound a LOT better

I'm aware of that, but I'd tried converting it to 128 and it still sounded way better than on SC. There's some weird distortion going on that's not just because of the low bitrate. Still no idea what it could be!

They might even lower the sample rate so it loads quicker. Don't get too upset about it - just live with it, we all do :).

One way around this is to create an ok/good sounding 128mp3 and upload that. Guarantee it will sound better. There's less info for soundclouds converters to fuck up.

I would have thought as soon as they have the means to, SoundCloud would get their sh*t together and sorted this out as i've heard this a lot and I agree :L Unless SC are sitting around with their fingers in their ears...

Take some time when you export & upload.
I've never had noticeable issues.
