ALPACAFILES

Post by Devry_Kaneda » Mon Jul 02, 2012 3:01 am

Forumites, secret ninjas, secretsecret alpacas, earlier today a fantastic idea emerged; that being the creation of an archive for classic dubstep mixes. I'm sure most of you can recognize the similarities between the thread title and a certain "barefiles", which used to be run by Deapoh.

Sadly, barefiles has been down for some time and no replacement has been found. Thus, I propose that we as a community, work together to create an archive, hopefully similar in quality and depth to barefiles.

I'm sure you all know how awesome it feels to stumble upon a bunch of classic mixes from years ago, but that experience can also be marred by dead links, as well as the sheer difficulty of finding such. It makes perfect sense to put all our collected efforts together in terms of archived mixes and to restore the library that Deapoh created.

Now I want to make clear that this isn't some attempt to piggyback off the merit of Deapoh's creation, rather an effort to give others the same feeling of unearthing a piece of digital musical history. This is meant to be a tribute to barefiles.

Now, to do this, we are going to need everyone's help. I have taken the liberty of registering the domain Alpacafiles.com, entitled as such in honor of the secretest of hideouts, found in the deepest, darkest recess of the internet and of course, barefiles.

But outside of registering silly domain names, we need people to contribute mixes, preferably at first just the ones that inhabited alpacafiles's namesake, but also any other mixes of a classic nature. We also need people to help create the website itself, a task I am woefully incapable of completing. We need somebody to design a clever alpaca-related logo. We need to figure out how to pay for all of this(I would hope we could keep it running on donations alone).

The list goes on...

Thus, I want to open this dialogue for the further discussion of this endeavor. So far, I know that NilsFG has offered to start building the site itself tomorrow, and I know that a few people have come forward(fractal comes to mind) who have a large portion of the original mixes, but it would only make sense to work to improve that archive, making it larger, and allowing it's scope to expand farther forward.

Thus, I end this missive for a little sleepy time, but feel free to pm me with anything you guys don't want to post on this thread itself.

I must mention that I know dont know dick about web design, and that any technical questions are better left to this thread to let one of the many geeks on this forum answer!

Also, if you just want to contribute some classic mixes to this effort, give a good look through your hard drives, but don't just go and upload them all to some filehosting site and post them here! We should come up with a decent plan for centralizing these mixes so they can all be efficiently loaded onto the site for all!

Yours Truly,
Devry[Kaneda]

EDIT1(31JUN12) - if you have a mix that you'd like to contribute, try to find out as much information about it as possible(Date, tracklists, radios how, dj/mc) so we can make this as thorough and easy to navigate!

I've got a decent amount of barefiles shit on my old hard drives, I'll scrape through those tonight/tomorrow. I can try to work with Nils on a website (if he even wants my help), but I'm working on a logo right now. I'm trying to decide, do we want to be sort of tongue in cheek and jokes with the whole alpaca thing or should it be a bit more professional looking? i've got the original font, do we want to do a straight knock off for now?

I've got a hosting plan currently going on dreamhost with unlimited bandwidth and storage, but ashley mentioned there might be problems with rules against archiving. I figure we won't really hit critical mass for a while, so we can at least use that to get it up and running and then we can figure out a more permanent hosting solution, I guess.

biggles for taking the initiative and registering the domain :W:

I would prefer keeping it a little tongue-in-cheek, but whatever you can come up with is great! As for content, I you consider it classic or noteworthy, it deserves a place on alpacafiles. This shouldn't be a literal re-creation of barefiles.

Hell, I'd be for uploading user-submitted mixes!

I've got a fair few old skream mixes for when uploads become available.

Dark dubstep, fair amount of unsigned/amateur tracks from the forums too.

If you need any help on designs or development/coding let me know! :) I was thinking of setting up a pretty similar website for people to submit free music while auto-updating other parts.
