Album of the month (mixmag) june issue reviewed by joe muggs
More bangers than the butcher’s counter at Sainsburys
Over a decade Dubchild has made sterling tunes in grime, bassline, breakstep and more - but of late he’s been about awesomely heavy balls-out half-step dubstep, and these 13 tracks deliver again and again on that front. Only once on this album does the pressure let up - on “Free Your Mind” - but even that track is tense and sinister. The rest are furious noise-fests... BUT never formulaic: there’s no Dr P or Skrillex ripoffs here - each track is thickly layered with fresh and original sounds and surprises, so it doesn’t get tiresome. Sometimes it can be over dense, and the few vocals get swallowed up a bit, but overall it (brutally) hits the target again and again.
