Coming with some big up front business and a load of fire on wax, Raynulds steps up for Awkward Movements Sessions #37. Still killing it on the live scene, watch this space for info on his own productions - we've been hearing some early bits and pieces and looking forward to what's coming.

A bunch of records I've been playing a lot lately, mostly new, a few older ones. I particularly want to point out the Graphics tune, a big favourite of mine - along with Objekt, Graphics is one of the most promising new producers of 2011. Big shouts also to Nikhil and the Man Make Music boys for hooking me up with the Jack Dixon & Rick Grant tune - look out for MMAKEM002 dropping late November, including a remix from Kevin McPhee. Apart from the aforementioned unreleased track it's all vinyl, mixed the old fashioned way with some slipping and sliding left in for good measure.

More like this every second saturday on http://www.sub.fm 11am-1pm

Ekoplekz - Terror/Danger [Punch Drunk]
Maya Jane Coles - Humming Bird [Hype LTD]
Move D - Between Us [Shanti Records]
Legowelt - Moves For CeeCee [Clone Store Only Series]

Nyx - Goddess Of The Night [Restoration Records]
Jack Dixon & Rick Grant - Running Man [Forthcoming Man Make Music]
Mosca - Bax [Numbers]
Conqueror - Highest Order [Lobster Boy]

Awkward Movements Sessions #38 - Charity Queen presents A Chronology of Electroacoustic and Electronic Music

Something really special for Charity Queen's debut sessions with Awkward Movements. The long time Kamikaze accomplice has outdone himself compiling a chronological mix of the history of electronic music. There's full notes on the structure and the tracks going up at http://www.awkwardmovements.com/2011/11 ... arity.html - worth the read while listening to the mix.

"This mix is a sequence of electronic and electroacoustic works which I feel did something new, whether technically or aesthetically, in whatever era they were made. Most importantly, they're all the electronic works that I like most, rather than just being a list of came firsts (e.g., Paul Lansky's early FM synthesis experiment is in despite John Chowning having been on it for a few years by that point). I've tried to keep it 'musique concrete' by only using works that were recorded when they were composed, hence the absence of John Cage's scored 'mix' works and Olivier Messiaen's early works for Ondes Martenot.

I'm slightly mortified reading my tracklist back to find there are no women here. To that end, check out Laurie Spiegel, Maryanne Amacher, Daphne Oram, Johanna Beyer's Music of the Spheres from 1938 (why oh why didn't I kick this mix off with that?), Pauline Oliveros, and Eliane Radigue for more early electronic goodness".

Pierre Schaeffer - Etude aux Chemins de Fer - (1948) / 00:00 - 02:00
Stockhausen - Studie II (1954) / 02:00 - 04:50

Awkward Movements Sessions #39 - Kamikaze

Probably the most accessible thing Kamikaze has ever delivered for Awkward Movements Sessions, in what he's calling his 'pop sessions' - though the quality hasn't dropped one bit. A beautiful selection across two hours of some classics and some yet unknowns, and of course a bit of Sandwell District. Incidentally there's a genius piece of writing on Sandwell District in The Wire this month, check it out.

Kamikaze delivers a two-hour pop special for this edition of The Awkward Movements Sessions. Tune in for brand new techno belters from Rich Oddie and Powell; wonky sludge-hop from Expressway Yo-Yo Dieting, and a bit of grass-hop from Actress; whilst Silent Servant, Kalon, and Function all contribute on the Sandwell tip. Those bits aside, you'll also find a bit of sixties trip from The Velvet Underground and The White Noise, relentless crack n bass from Muslimgauze, fiery drums from Broadcast, and I'm-not-really-sure-what-you'd-call-it from Throbbing Gristle. Also within, a slice of head-melt nonsense from Marcus Schmickler, and my favourite album in frickin' ages in the shape of Ghedalia Tazartes' Repas Froid on Pan. And if all that leaves you hungry for more, Kid Koala takes his turn on the regurgaplate; Suum Cuique offers a barely-audible blisser; and Tropic Of Cancer raid the demo pile.

I know I always say it, but it really is all good. Dig in people, happy Friday x

Powell - The Ongoing Significance Of Steel & Flesh [Diagonal]
Broadcast - Drums On Fire [Warp]
Marcus Schmickler - Quasi-Segratative [Editions Mego]
Actress - Facless [Honest Jons]
Silent Servant/Kalon - Violencia [Sandwell District]
Tropic Of Cancer - Awake [Downwards]
The Velvet Underground - Heroin [Polydor]
Throbbing Gristle - Weeping [Industrial]
Ghedalia Tazartes - Repas Froid side A [Pan]
The White Noise - Here Come The Fleas [Island]
Function - Falling The Same Way (Dommnue Version) [Sandwell District]
Expressway Yo-Yo Dieting - Untitled B [Weird Forest]
Rich Oddie - Refraction [Surface]
Muslimgauze - Sphinx Of Damascus [Staalplaat]
Suum Cuique - Even In Death..... [Young Americans]
Kid Koala - Remembrance [Ninja Tune]
The Velvet Underground - The Murder Mystery [Polydor]

Awkward Movements Sessions #41 - Who:Ratio

First session from Romanian DJ who:ratio, purveyor of many things electronic and aloof comic book geek. This mix titled 120 Mix Principles (as in BPMs), taking it all back to the one tempo these tracks were designed to be played at, finely selected and layered / mixed / sequenced / transitioned / whatevers - digitally.

"If a wax mix is a meditation on music, than this is a study of that pre/post-meditation.

The idea behind the concept "mix principles / principles of mixing" is the study of and what is actually "mixing / beat-mixing music"? Before we had direct drive and analog pitch shifting to fine digital pitch adjust and now the oh-so-easy sync function, there was just the music and the mixer. In my slow acceptance of the digital format I found that I started to neglect the music and not pay as much attention to the tracks because it has become so easy to get ... unlike when buying vinyl, storing it is just forking out for another hard-drive. So limiting myself to basic software(Toast 9) for making/sequencing/mixing the session, i've found myself really thinking and listening again to the pieces and how they fit or at least should sound together in order to tell the story. But without getting stuck into BS soap-box babble all i can say is that i still enjoy and have fun mixing".

Sarp Yilmaz - My Baby Got to Go [Apparel Music]
Ugly Drums - Is It Worth It? [Quintessentials]
Christopher Rau - For You and for Me [Aim]
Aeromaschine - Not So [Baalsaal Records]
Prommer & Barck - Journey (KiNK Remix Hoez 2 Dollah Edit) [Derwin]
Vakula - Unthank 2_3 [Unthank]
Szare - Triplicate [Horizontal Ground]
Emptyset - Avichi [CLR]
Ozka - Square Beauty [Ann Aimee]
Lifes Track - Lifes Track 07 [Bosconi Records]
Stojche - Basement Rascal [Argumento Music Group]
Tom Trago - Once Upon A Time In Amsterdam [Rush Hour]

Awkward Movements Sessions #42 - Paris A.M.

Paris A.M. aka Tom Lee is one of the main heads holding it down for the London scene, bringing his impeccably diverse music tastes to a wider audience by balancing a variety of projects. Now that there's a notable absence on Resonance.fm with him finishing up Sine Of The Times, we needed to get him next for a mix.

The mix is mainly made up of tunes from this year that I didn't get chance to play during my time on Sine Of The Times (http://www.sineofthetimes.net), with a few classics thrown in for good measure. For more mixes and any productions check out http://soundcloud.com/paris-a-m

Kerri Chandler - So It Begins Again (DC10 Mix) [Madhouse Records]
Locked Groove - Drowning [Hotflush]
Pacific Blue - Industry Part 1 [Pacific Blue]
Rejected - For The People (Ben Klock Remix) [Rejected]
Cosmin TRG - Izolat [50 Weapons]
Vrill - UV [Ostgut Ton]
EQD - #111 03 [Equalized]
Beastie Respond - Syncopy (Blawan's Trecther Mechanica) [Teal Recordings]
VCMG - Spock (Regis Remix) [Mute]
Caribou - Sun (Midland Re-edit) [White]
Guido Schneider - Moved (Refreshed) [Pokerflat]
Untold - Little Things Like That [Clone Basement Series]
Wandler - Get Together (Jonas Kopp Get Alone Remix) [KumQuat Tunes]
Truncate - Concentrate [Truncate]
Objekt - Clk Recovery [Objekt]
EQD - #111 10 [Equalized]

Awkward Movements Sessions #43 - Jimmy Monsta Funk

For my latest mix for Awkward Movements, I decided to throw caution to the wind and bring a techno-based mix with a few surprises along the way.

Although much of what I hear from the music press, bloggers and other DJs seems to be about keeping to one style, I have always been about trying to join disparate elements into a flowing set; it’s very much my belief that the range of tracks out there right now could lead to a real renaissance in dance music akin to what I experienced during 1991.

During this year I saw DJs as diverse as amongst others Sasha, Fabio and Grooverider, Dave Angel, Mickey Finn, Slipmatt, Frankie Knuckles and Jumpin’ Jack Frost. What was clear was that pretty much anything goes, so you would hear Italian House, Belgian Techno and banging London breaks all in the same setting, this would create the same highs and lows you get from a symphony, a double album or a film soundtrack.

This mix features tracks that are listed online as ‘Minimal’ (including Rodriguez Jr.), ‘Deep House’ (including tracks by Ferrer & Hommen and Okain), ‘Electro-house’ (such as The Art Department track), ‘UK Funky’ (such as Seiji and Boddika & Joy Orbison), ‘Electro’ (in the form of Morphology), ‘Drum & Bass’ (from Marcus Intelex) and of course the genre that forms a majority of my record collection, ‘Techno’.

On top of the artists mentioned above, I include new music from Mark Flash (straight from the wonderful UR affiliated distribution company www.submerge.com), Omar S & Ob Ignitt, Marcel Fengler and Kevin Gorman. There’s some classic techno from G-Man and Tralopscinor (both re-released in the last 12 months) and a cracking UR track by Dark Energy from 1994, some old school drum & bass from Photek and Subject 13, a brilliant old school remix from 1992 of Inner City (remixed by Kevin Saunderson himself and definitely influenced by his trips to the Midlands to work with Nexus 21 / Altern-8) and a track from the aforementioned year of 1991 from Confusion Club (an R&S white label that absolutely tore up dancefloors across the country and I still clearly remember hanging around after a night the Eclipse club to by my copy in Bangin Tunes in Coventry).

To top it all off, I’ve done a sly tribute to John Peel and dropped the Quintus Project at 45rpm rather than 33 (try that trick digital DJs without a bunch of plug-ins or some expensive studio software), after all rules are there to be broken.

I hope you enjoy the mix and even if you don’t try and open up your ears to music across the board, it will help with both your DJing and more importantly your production (which could lead me to buy your track, if it ever gets pressed on vinyl).

Peace out

Awkward Movements Sessions #44 - Timmy K

Back again for Awkward Movements Sessions, resident photographer and drum n bass selector Timmy K steps in for a 90 minute mix. Off the back of the response from his last Sessions, Tim's pulled together tracks that are a primer of his collection from the last few years, joints that never leave his playout list and tracks that are essential headphone listening when his on his way to take more shots. We've been informed that both Goldie and Bjork drops towards the end are pure self-indulgence, though both fit quite nicely into a seamless set of quality tunes.

Big ups!

Apologies for the delay between sessions, we've all been mad busy lately now that we're collectively doing crazy amounts of radio and a release a month. On that tip out to all who supported on the 'Riego Street' plate which dropped about a fortnight ago. Still a few of the limited plates kicking about for those that slept.

Well worth the wait for this one though, Raynulds returns to Awkward Movements Sessions in better form than ever. Digging deeper in to his box with tracks that start off dubbed out on the left than come back around with some house drops blended with techno tunes and ending on a few bangers. The tracklist speaks for itself.

Recorded live with decks, 100% wax and proper vibes across the whole hour.

Finally back on the Awkward Movements Sessions tip! Apologies for the delay but crew have been tied up in everything from NTS to Sub.fm to Reel Rebels and releasing plates including Bento, the new release from Semtek featuring an epic 12 minute remix from Scott Fraser, which you can check out here: http://www.awkwardmovements.com/2012/06 ... scott.html

One of our favourite from the crew of rotating guests -dyLAB - steps in for Awkward Movements Sessions once more. Based in Melbourne, the producer / drummer is holding it down for the analogue acid bass on a daily basis and as always has caught us off guard with his selections.

Might as well rename this "the-most-important-records-you-may-not-know-about-mix", with the 50 minute session boasting a beautiful structure. Starting off with what's considered the first ever 303 driven acid house joint and Chicago classics, through breakbeat driven rave, to the first statement of intent from 4Hero, early Hawtin into jungle / dnb through Chicago juke with the likes of Traxman and Rashad and clsosing off with Underground Resistance and one of the biggest tunes of the 90s.

Big ups to the man, this is a proper schooling.

The Metalheadz tribute mix! We've been waiting for Timmy K to drop this on us for time. As we've stated before the man has two loves - taking photos and drum n bass. The email that came attached with this 25 track monster sums up the attitude perfectly, and we can't think of anyone we would have rather had do it.

via Timmy K
"Firstly i have to say doing this was really hard, mixing tunes from one label is hard but in this case I had 150+ tunes to choose from. I expect anyone who knows the output of Metalheadz to criticise the mix because there is so many tunes that are missing and so many that mean so much to so many people there is no way of getting them all in.

I have gone for the ones that I like and mean something to me, it includes the full 21 minute of timeless. In case you don't know its from the album 'Timeless' by Goldie - label head and creative force behind Metalheadz. Unfortunately because of Bond films and appearances in Eastenders people hate on goldie and forget his major contribution to the UK music scene. He loves music and for any doubters please listen to his 6music mix with Dave Pearce you will find it online and it will hopefully make you think again.

Through his label and seminal nights at 'The Bluenote' he helped make drum and bass. He has also been a public face for the scene and also pushed the boundaries of what people think drum and bass is. Goldie has created music with David Bowie, conducted an orchestra and brought a Timeless to the proms. This is partly why his label is so important not just to the UK DnB scene but to the whole of electronic music.

The label is a corner stone of the scene. It has been breaking new artists since day one, I can only sugest watching this doc to get a better idea http://www.awkwardmovements.com/2012/09 ... -1998.html, re-listen to Timeless and go and find some tunes by Dillinja, Source Direct, Commix, J Majik, Doc Scott, Ed Rush and Optical or look at the discogs page.

Also the mix was done without loops or fx , ok it was done digitally but i tried to keep it as technically close to when I first stated mixing on a Numark Red 2 Channel Mixer and some shit Gemini belt drive decks. Its not technically good but the tunes hopefully speak for themselves."
