crunkedxup wrote:@krinj - have you considered changing the synth? i like the track overall (i dont usually like that style but it reminds me of 16bit haha). if the main "wobble" was a more percussive sound (like something Jakes or Coki would have) i think it'd have more effect, just my two cents. great track anyway.
do you have a specific track/sound in mind? I actually consider this bass sortof a signature one. While I'm digging these 16bit comparisons can someone point out where they're coming from as I'm not totally sure?

Thanks a lot man by the way.

no prob. not sure on an example, which i know is really unhelpful haha. its fine as is, might even be the mix that made me think that.

16-bit because it's ultra-heavy and the drums are similar also.

@clodmeister

liking the sound design on that ice cream tune mate. main synth is really nice. the structure is slightly confusing, although being someone who mainly listens to music that isn't even in-time i can appreciate that haha.

It goes from 150 to 170 on the intro to 145 i think haha. Then it speeds up to fast moomba. That was an older one of my tunes but glad u liked it tho.

Sup guys, it's been a while since I poked my head in here but I'm glad I did. I'm hearing a lot of nice stuff.

@npcompl33t: nice job for a first effort. snare sounds a little weak, maybe the synth is just a little overpowering. since it's an electro track, I'm assuming you want the drop to stand out, which it's not really doing yet in my opinion. I think because you use the same synth in the intro, the drop isn't as "surprising" as it could be.

@sinestepper: percussion is spot-fucking-on dude. what do you have in there? sounds like some kettle/metallic-y drums. My monitors blow dick and only go down to about 80hz, so I'm just assuming you have some beastly sub-bass going on after the drop?

@mthrfnk: pretty solid man, love the mellow and upbeat vibes. nice synth and pad work. kick might be a tiny bit too loud/stand out too much. love that woodblock (I think?) in there!

@krinj: nice work for where it's at so far. Needs a decent amount of work mixing/mastering wise, seems like you have a few things clipping. with that said, it's pretty nice. reminds me of bratkilla's stuff. My only suggestion would be mixing up your bassline, it gets a little repetitive.

Here's my newest track. Trying a different, jungle-ish sounding thing. Let me know what you guys think

Hey!
I'm new to dubstep production and my WIP is actually 200 bpm (so technically it's not really dubstep)... but i'd like you to give me some feedback anyway...

Now for my feedback (note that I'm just a beginner and I can't really help those more experienced than me, but meh)

@opr: Really like the wall of bass at the start (I could really feel it in my chest). Intro was very well done and I see you put a bit of thought into it. Also like the twangy sounds at the beginning. There isn't much criticism that I can really give to your track. Good work! :D

@FluidMoShun Love the vocal work... You need to PM me some tips on slicing vocals... lol... very original and unique as I haven't really listened to a track that uses a majority glitched vocals to contribute to it's melody. Nodding my head throughout the whole thing. Good drum work as well. Loved it! :)

@Craggle Really liked this track... especially the spacey feel of the intro and the base that comes in... nice job. Love the synths that you used as well. Looks pretty polished to me, man.

Sweet track man :P. It sort of reminds me of girl boy song by aphex crossed with the music from crash bandicoot (this is good) :D Thanks for the feedback there is a sub after the drop and those percs are heavily pitched down congas. Nice one :)

a bit all over the place with the order here, but going back a few pages....

and a big thankyou to difference, Grok, almostskate1000 and BudSpecertron for the great advice a while ago, very useful...

@Sinestepper both the most recent wip you posted and the tune in your sig are foooookin huuuuuuuge!
definately swtich up the drums a bit in the first one, and the percs sound like they have too much 'bonk' in them, get rid of some mids. kick could be louder imo as well. and chuck in a really simple melodic line with a harmony over the top, nothing too fancy, and it'll set it off nicely every 4-6-16 bars or whatever.

the tune in your sig is rediculous. one of the most fresh basslines i've heard in a long time. listening to it now with a zoot and losing it a bit ahaha, actually that good. the little asian samples sound perfect, and the really subtle bits of ambience and additions of modulating delay (sounds like it) set it off. would love 320s of these so i can play em out in Sydney some time! will pm ya tomorrow :D

@KrEs definately beef up your bassline by layering it and adding saturation/modulation/whatever the fuck you want except mabye reverb, and tech it out. it'll sound much more groovey if you add a whole lot of effects that work together, and fade them in and out of each other, if that makes sense? layer that kick too, bring out some higher frequencies to make it pop a bit also. and vary the hats a bit to keep the listeners interest as well as push the tune along.

@willryan042 sounding good man, refreshing sound! very chilled out, but the drums give it a lot of momentum at the same time. only thing is it sounds like the vocal is mabye out of key with the rest of the tune. just check you're harmonising everything (unless you don't want to, just my preference). on the topic of harmony, sometimes it sounds like your melody is just wandering around aimlessly in terms of the harmonic progression...it wanders through major and minor keys constantly. unless you consciously chose to wrote in a middle-eastern/asian mode, then i'd suggest changing 2-3 notes in each phrase so it sounds more consistent. just my preference :)

@Clodmeister i really just want to add a grime beat underneath that second tune in your sig. like a double-time 140bpm beat underneath with big claps and shit would sound fucking rippppeeeeeeeerrrrr. if you want ;)

@mthrfnk this is pretty groovey man, mabye take a bit of the distortion, crunchy sound out of the bass, or eq out some of the gnarly frequencies, sounding a bit owie on my ears haha. mabye double that bell kinda melody with a filtered square wave sorta sound, like the woody bass sounds a lost of deep house tunes have. otherwise really nice, the sidechaining effect works great with the style, and the chilled out intros/breakdowns work great too

@Tad tune is pretty sick, got heaps of space, really well crafted structurally and in terms of the mix. the mix is a bit reverby for my liking, and it sounds like a lot of the mids are missing in the sound. mabye same with the snare? needs a little more of the lower side of the mids in it, mabye...otherwise absolutely sick! would love a 320 when youre done! will pm ya

@BudSpencertron wiiiiicked tune, sounds faaaaat. how did you get it so loud? did you smash the shit out of it with a compressor or something? i had my comp volume up halfway and your tune was about twice as loud.

@VirusTI actually sounding like a tune with lots of potential!!! don't really listen to a lot of music like that, but sounds mad. one major mix issue: that snare is KILLER. way too many nasty frequencies in there, high and mid. make sure youre eqing out all those unnecessary inaudible low frequencies too (in anything that you don;t want bassy sounds in). are you sidechaining at all? if you are get rid of it, sounds a bit too 'sucky' and 'whooshy'.

for the mix, the simple rule is get your kick at the level you want, then add in snare likewise, then hats and percussion, then bassess/sub, then everything else. so your mix is centered around the kick and snare mainly, which will add presence to the tune. and go through with an eq on every single track, dragging a notch around at a high dB to listen to any frequencies that stick out way too much or that you don't like/want in the sound/clash too much with others.
general rule of thumb also, 500hz and 5kHz = danger zones, lots of clashes go on here, so cut small holes around here in most things.
and less is more when it comes to fine eqing - 1-2dB will be more effective than 4-8

@theOtherThing i normally hate any kind of broey dubstep/drumstep/moohmba...but this is actually pretty cool!!! sounds like you got a good idea of what you're doing...the tempo change will confuse the shit out of a dancefloor, but i personally think its mad!!!!

@DougReiley TUNE IS BIG....WOULD LOVE A 320 TO PLAY OUT. WILL PM YAAAAA

@almostskate1000 WICKED!!! serious big man wobbles, sub heavy, weight business!!! would love a 320 when you've finished the tune, will pm ya

@InTheCrowd also wicked! this is a mad night, sitting at home just chillin late at night (in sydney, yeeeeeewwwwww) and heaps of amazing tunes here, not even finished! will pm ya about the tune!

@dotcurrency add a big fat sub line underneath it, or beef up whatevers there already (sounds like the bass is just very weak, add saturation/compression), tidy up some of the wobbles (which i find a bit cheesey, you could use different sounds mabye, slower rhythms), pump the fuck out of your drums and make them go double time every 8-16 bars, and you got yourself a bangin grime tune too! once again, just what i'm hearing in my head ;)

ok i think thats enough for now! phew!
so, theres a few issues here that i'm already aware of:
1-the breakdown is a bit jarring, will probably filter it and get rid of the percussion.
2-some of the gain structure is a bit out, will just have to go back and re do the mixdown i guess
3-i think all the eq stuff is pretty much done but things still clash a little, mabye just need to get rid of a few sections?
4-im not convinced about the reverb...

advice will be very much appreciated, this is a re-working of a previous wip i posted here that i'm trying to get moving for a release in the coming months...thanks people!

hansvictoriayeeros First of all add a side chain compression almost to everything , bass, drums with long reverb, to hi hats ( which are quite low and uqued ?) pads, noise , just add a slight sid chain compression, youll see the whole tune will start pusing as one thing. the tune itself is a good idea just really want you to finsh it. So work on ouy percussion, compression and eq, I dont feel you working on your drums and percussion, bass could be higher, the conversations could be a little bit more in time with the beat, the intro could be a little bit more grovy , try looking at the elements that grove in other peoples songs and study mixing in depth ) its your only problem, good work. Interesting to listen to.

willryan042 same , add side chain compression to EVERYTHING (aprt from the kick and the snare, but that obvious i guess) and make the high pitch solo pad thing lower, the melody after vocal and the bass dont match notewise quite often, my advice here would be listen to each instruments part separately and the with one othe instrument in solo, then if it sounds wrong youll hear it, its hard at the beginning, but you cant do with dissonanse (or how do you spell it ? ) it spoils everything, apart from that ennoying aspect its good.

Clodmeister the kick is not low, and the snare is very quite, the main synth is a bit too random, it doesnt have a particular melody or rithm, it has to repeat at least some things should, good sound desigh ideas, good structure thinking, but the melody is not ready, and the rythm as well, where are you hi hats ? apart from thats you're on right way, its not boring )

Willyran42- nice chill track but everything else besides the drums could be turned down a bit, when the beat comes in the kick andsnare lose the punch that they had in the beginning. love the pan panpipes! very nice atmosphere, not sure if a sample or made sounds awesome though, id say just the mix could use some work.

Kres- love the intro with the drums and bass creeping up, the open hihat is a little loud . and the high pitched bell things could use some variation to spice it up a bit, but all in all its a solid intro.

hansvictoria-love the vocal sample with the strings building up, i think at 30 you should just surpise the listener bringing in the drums at full volume rather than bringing them up slowly. throw some parralel compression on those drums to make them fat! love those synths and blips in the backround, really awesome atmosphere! id say lose the first third of the intro pre breakdown before the vocals as its a little long.the breakdown is nice as you changed the synths and sounds a bit. only big thing for me is just the drums! just a little fattening up and youve got a proper tune !

alexeyherman - the spacey noises in the intro are cool but could be turned down a bit cause i cant tell what the vox sample is saying, the kicks with the growl are cool, just those glitchy noises are a little loud still, nice kick roll buildup! nice wobbles with melody! mix sounds pretty good and nice variation in sound design! only thing i could really say is maybe in the second drop cut to double time to spice it up? solid chill bro tune dude

im making tunes again after 6 months, thought i would come back with a loud bro tune, this hasnt been mixed at all yet just a quick little sample. :N: :5: :5:

@alexeyherman
wondering which tune of mine are u talking about? the ones in my sig are finished to my liking, perhaps there are some different directions i would take with the ice cream tune but thats an old tune of mine that im done with. but i uploaded one a couple pages back that was a WIP called Squid bass. A much different song, a wonky weird one at 113 bpm i made for fun. Still working on the limiting and still mixing.

Soundcloud

I hear the rhythms, but thats just me. if ur talking about arise, its got a melody that repeats as you may notice when the vox starts, but it is a short song. I didn't want the snares to feel upfront, but maybe they could have been louder at times. If thats what u where talking about.thanks for critiquing though, i like your tune :)
@hansvictoriayeeros - that sounds like a cool idea, made the song at 163 bpm though. dig ur track aswell ;-)

This isn't bad man, solid sounds, needs a sub and it's way dry but it's sick, only problem is the skrillex sounds, they're well done enough that they even sound sampled, and it's great, but you could leave those spots blank and go for a dark atmospheric feel or put your own sound there, they don't really fit anyways IMHO, but welcome back man.

@KrEs this track was actually pretty unique, although the open hats got really annoying. Either turn them down or get rid of them/
@dubby_rdam I really like the arps in this. drums sound good
@Krinj sounds pretty good, although the bass is a little too distorted.
