Grave of the fireflies ! (hotaru no haka) is a captivating anime as well. Also Memories (memorizu) by Otomo (same guy as Akira).

Agree, the atmosphere in Vampire Hunter D is quite special. I only have the 1985 movie (not bloodlust), which is ever so slightly lacking in animations and characters to make it into the top for me. But good atmosphere nonetheless.
