Grave of the fireflies ! (hotaru no haka) is a captivating anime as well. Also Memories (memorizu) by Otomo (same guy as Akira).

Fireflies is on my 'to do' list, heard good things! Memories was dope, the actual Manga was good too!

duno what it was about it, maybe it was where i was in my head when i first watched it, thought it was incredible.

genuinely think its one of the most beautifully shot and scored films of all time

Casey Affleck's performance really put me off. Everything else was great but something about him just didn't feel right. And I loved him in Killer Inside Me and Gone Baby Gone...

think Casey Affleck was absolutely perfect in that role

the point of the character is to make you feel uneasy, you're not really meant to love him in Jesse James, he's hated by the end of the film by everyone he meets, he hates himself, he's the antithesis of Jesse James and despite the fact you confusingly feel some semblance of pity and compassion for him, you dont feel anything for him once he's dead. He's killed in the same way he kills his hero, and he turns into the villain. Nobody weeps for him when he's dead. Its all in the performance. Think its the first film i saw him in where i thought he really did well and pretty much outshone everyone else.

I have to agree with noam here. He plays a loser very well. I didn't like him as tough guy in gone baby gone, now that put me off . But yes, different opinions.

Agree on Empire of the Sun, it was a good movie to watch as a kid. Now that I'm an adult, I find it less spectacular though

the swedish millenium trilogy were exceptional - not as good as the books but still really good. much better than the hollywood crapfest with daniel craig. the extended versions are the ones to watch.

Everything by Miyazaki Senior is gold. Junior's movies were quite crap to be honest.

Favourite remains Nausicaa of the valley of the wind (included in my list). But really, anything by senior does the trick.

Bebop is good, movie is good also.
Ghost in the shell of course as well. Also, anything by the late Satoshi Kon (RIP) is worth checking out too.
