The challenges of producing edm

Whenever I try to produce a track, I eventually run into a problem where I don't know how to do something I want. Wether it be something with a synth, or a plugin, or just the software itself. I use 3 different ones. I use ableton 8, logic pro 9, and reason 5, and it seems that there is always something stoping my creative flow! What do you guys do to keep active, and finish your tracks!!

you bought three daws and you can't be asked to sit down and learn one of them inside and out...

Try Youtubing for it? The learning process will become less of a problem slowly.

When you sit in the studio, don't have a super set idea for the tune because you force it. It should come to you. Don't let the tool overpower your mind too, if you can't make a sound, don't let it bug you. Make sound when your bored or can't do anything in the studio. 20 hours for tunes, 4 for sounds. Walk around your house or take a walk and think of other tunes and listen to your iPod to get ideas from your old tunes or someones tunes (don't copy their tune obviously), listen to your favorite genre or favorite producer, if you smoke weed, do not do it in the studio or you will not make your best tunes. Unplug your internet or close it and take your phone, take out the batteries and move it away from your work place. If you put a white board in your studio somewhere for your ideas, I guarantee that you will never forget anything. Stay creative in and out of the studio. If it means writing down what you want to do or what your dreams were last night, so be it. If you're walking in the park and your imagination sparks and creates giant robots flying and fighting in the sky, so be it, write in your phones notepad and transfer it to your notebook of creativity.

P.S. To tackle plugins/synths that are bothering you and blah blah you cant make a sound, you should learn sound design to make some good sounds to beat the problems of making sounds.
P.S.S Learn one D.A.W not three! Find your favorite one you know the ins and outs of and then sell the lisences of the other 2 (if you want) to buy some sample packs and plugins!

Work. Thinking about work, complaining about work and mindlessly fiddling with synths when I want to finish tracks isn't work. The only thing that matters is creating forward progress with the song im making. Sound design, mixing and all of the other components of production are secondary to my ability to finish songs.

But anyway, you kind of answered your own question, to finish tracks you keep active, and more than anything, work when you dont want to.

Like others said, your problem is youre trying to use 3 DAWs. Seriously?

For reals, just learn 1 program. They all do more or less the same exact things.
Just different roads that lead to the same destination.

If you actually paid for the software you used, you wouldn't be having this problem. Because you'd actually take the time to learn the program you bought. Rather than wasting time trying to learn 3 different (pirated

) DAWs at the same time.
That's just crazy. Right now you're the one blocking your own "creative flow".

Choose 1 DAW.
Delete the other 2 (shouldn't be so hard since they were all free for you)
Learn that 1 program like the back of your hand. Then maybe you'll be able to do the things you don't know how to do.

Seems logical, right? Some people man, I swear...

Well, it's just that I have been at this for 3 years, and it is something I can never give up, but it just gets frustrating when I keep running into stumbling blocks, that hinder how good I want my track to be made, and how quickly I want it finished.

None are pirated my friend. I go to school took out loans and got some equipment and software. I don't even think you can pirate logic or ableton anyways.

Sounds like your problem is you have too much choice. Pick a DAW, now pick 3 or 4 instruments and learn to make a song with just those few instruments. I think it would help immensely if you limit your self to see how creative you can get with a minimal palette.

^^^ Good suggestion. My current approach is to sample from the Absynth demo, and run through a free sampler. I might go through and choose one VST for each effect.

Yea I know reason 5 very pirated, but I had no idea logic, and ableton are! I got ableton for live production with my band-we all threw in on it, but the learning curve is HUUGE!!

We record ourselves, in logic, and I use reason 5 as just one huge plugin I guess you could say. In then end though, I am just bitchin, and I need to just keep at it!! That vid with ill. was great by the way
