MPK Mini Owners: Flimsy knobs + usb soldering?

Post by chopsui » Sat Jul 07, 2012 9:52 am

So I finally caved and got the MPK mini and fell in love with the thing, and recently guitar center tried to sell me an returned item for the new item price, so im wondering if all akai minis are flimsy or just this one I got?

When I push down on the knobs it sounds like cheap glue is breaking and feels like the knobs are gonna fall off easily. The mini-usb connector on the MPK Mini is also really loose and flimsy feeling and I've read it was soldered onto the mobo really poorly, leading to it snapping off and not working. My mini usb seems really loose and I honestly think this thing won't even last a year.

Other than that I love this thing, thats why I wanna know are yours are flimsy as mine? Or was mine just dropped and returned and fucked around with. Theres no seal or anything to prove it was opened but the interface I got from them had a broken seal and with their 30 day no hassle return policy, who knows what the previous owners did. If I'm spending money on equipment I want to know it's gonna last it's full life. This focusrite should last for years, the mini I was hoping would at least last 2-3 years.. I really like this thing and I don't want them to cheat me into buying their pro coverage because they sell me jacked up gear, I could just order it from sweetwater and be sure I'm getting it NEW.

Is yours flimsy? Yes or No

Tell me you didn't buy a returned item for the new price?

My knobs are relatively smooth - not like breaking glue, they shouldn't feel like that unless your forcing them round more than they go? The USB thing is apprently an issue but I've yet to notice it on mine, even though I'm pretty rough with it.

Return it, ask for a new and sealed item. Fuck messing about with a potentially repaired/returned one.

they are really shady at guitar center about that stuff. they want to peddle off the 30 day satisfaction guaruntee gear, probably because I pricematched it so low they just want to give the crap to me. I called up the guy and he was all emberassed and was like "the guys just get it from the back it wasn't me man bla bla come in I'll replace it."

Yeah, I'm going back with the MPK Mini and the 2i2 and asking for a sealed, new, non-returned item.

Btw I don't mean when I turn the knobs, I pushed them down a little to see how sturdy they are and I heard weird little crackles, oh well. I liked the knobs on the NanoKontrol2 way better but the MPK Mini is toooooooo bomb. So portable, really great pads, and four programmable banks give you 32 knobs and so many pads, this thing is a mini monster.

Anyway, fuck GC, you gotta be on your game and make sure they don't rip you off, they will pull all kinds of nasty tricks.

I called and asked if I price match amazon is it the out the door price, since there is no tax or shipping, they said yes. On that order, i got that price out the door. I checked some of my older receipts and they charged me tax anyway. Sometimes they pull bs like "we still have to charge tax," but when you call them out on it they "talk to the manager" and make you feel like you're being picky just so they can make a few extra bucks, fucking lame. I just said fuck this I'm buying it from amazon then, then they changed their tune real quick. They get really greedy with their comission, come on greedy fucks.

I dont trust those guys, the manager got my MPK mini off the shelf, it was the one in the front, I'm assuming they put the items they want to get rid of in the front and they "grab it for you." YOU WONT BELIEVE THIS!, the 2nd MPK on the shelf fell like 8 feet off the shelf HARD onto the ground and he (the manager) just looks around to see if any employees saw then throws it back on the shelf like nothing happened. FUCK GC. The only reason I'm buying here is b/c I got pro coverage and they give you "store credit" and you can't use your "store credit" with any of their special promos/discounts. WTF? They said I get my money back they didnt mention I have to pay their shitty overpriced tag price and waste my money. Shady Shady.

From now on I'm going to inspect every item in the store and be meticulous as fuck about them price matching. I am gonna return both for new sealed items, I don't trust them though. After my pro coverage cash is gone I'll be buying off a store with some morals. Oh yeah, they NEVER gave me the 10% difference when I price matched anything I bought there. NEVER. It's usually only a few bucks so I don't bother but I think I'll bring it up next time, as well as the tax he charged me cause I was in a hurry. Shit is starting to add up.

With their reputation, I bet they will drop my items like 10 times in the back before bringing it out to me just to get back at me for not taking their open box bs. I think I'll go to another local GC just to avoid some kind of weird personal anger issues of their employees have.

Don't let them scare you into buying the pro coverage, they will get really dirty about it. If you know your item is gonna last, dont bother. I know I dont need $17 pro coverage on the a $55 nanokontrol2, thing is built like a tank. With the MPK's flimsy solder connection I think its worth $17 to ensure I'll have a working MPK Mini for 3 years. It feels like if I'm laying down and I bang the cable while it's plugged in, the thing would snap so easily.

I don't understand how you were stupid enough to buy a possible piece of shit for the full price of a new one. Why the hell would you work so hard to try to get a pricematch on a used one when you could just buy a new one for that price from a reputable dealer. And why would you try to justify that with a stupid $17 3 year warranty that they probably won't hold up, and if they do you will probably get another piece of shit? Pretty much every online gear site gives a free at least one year warranty.

Honestly, for your sake, I hope your last post was a troll because it just filled me with rage at how stupid you are.
