Ableton Live + TouchDesigner Behind the Scenes

Post by elburz » Mon Jul 16, 2012 6:23 pm

Made a quick behind the scenes video of my latest audio-visual live show "Escape". I use Ableton Live, TouchDesigner, and Max 6 to make the show work, and the video is narrated and walks through how I've got everything setup and what's doing what.

Below is the trailer I made for the show.

Shoot any questions you got my way, I'd be more than happy to answer.

Thanks man! Could you be more specific about the sound you're wondering about? Are you referring the high pitched thing at about 0:37 in the trailer?

it occurs at 7 seconds, and 28 seconds. its like a low mechanical screech, some might call it a bass sound. i like its abstractness. it doesnt happen at 37 sec

Ah, I see which sound you mean now.

I got that sound by sending u-HE Tyrel (Tyrell?) with a square wave mixed with some noise, through a an analog filter vst (VPS philta, in this case), through camel phat, a bit crusher (sonalksis bit crusher), through another filter (the fabfilter one pole filter, can't remember the name), into another vps philta.

I played a lot with the ADSR and panning to give it some interesting motion. The first filter just rounds the sound out, nothing extreme, camel phat adds distortion, bit crusher gives it some grit, then I send it through the Fabfilter filter for a bit of color (it's a gritty filter I find), then through a final vps philta to really smooth it out.

It's a sum-of-the-parts sound, but the VPS philta is really what rounds it out and makes it smooth, if you haven't tried it, I got a free copy in a Computer Music (or Future music, can't remember which) cd, so you might be able to find it on their site or something.

Hope that helped and sorry about the delay!
