Safest way of transfering money?
I would like to purchase something via Gumtree but am worried in case the item is not received.
What is the safest way to transfer the money to the seller and be covered should all go worng?
Many thanks.

Gumtree scares me for this reason.
I was selling an iMac and the guy never paid.
I never sent the item but often wondered.

Yeah, this... if they're Londoners then I'd try and arrange to meet up and do the exchange in person.Ferryman wrote:Hand to hand.
If they're not then I guess look into the PayPal situation, but I'd be a bit wary on Gumtree... I've never had a problem, but it feels like scam central...

Re: Safest way of transfering money?
Im in South London and the seller is in Oxford and without transport hand to hand is out of the question. Plus the item is very heavy so a vehicle will be needed.

Paypal is your best option, make sure all correspondence is in writing and to keep a copy. If you're getting it shipped, tell him/her to send it to you with a tracking number and get them to advise you the number via Paypal. You will win a dispute no matter what in this situation if it is never delivered.

as long as you have a tracking number the other guy can never pull anything on you. He can try, but he will fail :p
Re: Safest way of transfering money?
The seller has replied saying he does not have a paypal account so I have withdrawn my interest.
I had my doubts and suspicions as the item was very reasonably priced, less than 50% of what ive seen for the same product through commercial sellers. He was a private seller but claimed he bought in bulk so was offer to sell so cheaply. He was only able to offer stock photography of the item as boxes were sealed and ready for delivery so i have no proof other than his 'guarantee'.
Guess its too good to be true.

yeah I tend to stay away from anything that looks remotely dodgy on the internet. There are too many shady arseholes out there just waiting for the next person to come along that they can screw over.faust.dtc wrote:The seller has replied saying he does not have a paypal account so I have withdrawn my interest.

Even on ebay if I'm sellin stuff I turn on the options to block new users from viewing my auctions and block anybody who has had any negative feedback over the past 12months.

Surely they can just send an empty box, or some cheap shit?hugh wrote:truth right here!lowphat wrote:Paypal is your best option, make sure all correspondence is in writing and to keep a copy. Re: Safest way of transfering money?
Gumtree = Collection in person
Ebay = Buying online
Never do a transaction on Gumtree where you're not seeing the item in the flesh and dealing in cash. If it goes wrong on Ebay you're covered, by PayPal and your credit card. If it goes wrong on Gumtree you're not, but if it's in person you can have a duel.

Re: Safest way of transfering money?
Ive bought and sold music gear over gumtree before by way of bank transfer, just give them a call and have a chat you can normally tell if someones genuine or not and if you get any sort of bad feeling dont bother. Depends what your buying though, there were a few gangs doing iphone4 and macbook scams over gumtree but if your buying specialist stuff you should be fine, trust your instincts!!!
