Girl Unit - Wut was a shotgun blast to the knee of Dubstep

didn't read the whole thread, just felt like saying I really like "Wut"
and tbh it has nothing to do with how it was made, or what style or scene it opened up or sounded like
idgaf if it's an 808 track, if it's "trap" or if it's dubstep or not
I believe that tune just resonated with a lot of people because of its melody.
It barely matters that it's constructed from some vocal samples and simple synths playing simple chords, though i do think the sounds are great too.
it's uplifting, an about-face from the deep dark shit and the crazy bro shit, it's more an uplifting garage vibe but on a halfstep 808 tune

My only point is i don't think any of that matters, the tune succeeded because it's a good melody. You can hum it, people like it, it's catchy. That's sometimes missing from a lot of bass music, and it's not always important or desirable, but it's nice once in a while... and that tune was fresh because of it.

On the trap thing: People in the dubstep/bass music scene are heralding it like some new invention. But here in the ATL we've been making that shit for years.

d and i think the dubstep/techno crossover stuff from 2007-2009 was better (as shown by allstars 6-7, round black ghost compilations/skull disco soundboy punishment/grave etc.)

What i miss from that time is what Martyn, TRG, 2562, Pangaea etc used to make. At least the first 2 of those more or less went 'full-out' techno afaik and thats been hit and miss compared to the awesome stuff they made back then.

More OT, i dont rate any of the night slugs type stuff very highly, its fun party music but a bit empty to me.

Yeah. I'd start with the Helixir and F albums. But all their catalogue is good imo. My personal favourites are:

I still like the stuff that Martyn and TRG are doing, Cosmins latest is phat! But yeah 2562 or AMUS is make some next level techno fuelled beats, his new one on 50 weapons is sick. I get you though, even though I still think its sick, i think earlier martyn etc. hit me more and made me go #wow
