Sausage Fattener, usage in your chain
My understanding is that sausage fattener is almost like a compressor/saturation plugin that also add some distortion to whatever sound you add this VST too.
When do you guys use this in your chain?
Before re sampling, after, both?
On your bass and sub buss, or only on the bass?
Before distortion, filter, eq or after?
Right now i am placing it on my sub bass/bass bus and setting to 15-30% with the color nob turned 1/4 of the way (for the most part)
Just wondering how you guys go about using this boss plugin.

Still yet to get ohmicide but will be my next purchase. Do you resample afterwards, and further process or keep midi until the full track is bounced?

If i feel like a bass or a kick, or sometimes a snare needs something after its been eqed to just make it sound a little more present i just throw sausage fattner on raise both knobs by %10 or less and call it good and forget about it.

It really depends on what kinda sound i'm going for to be honest, I usually leave the midi but if I wanna go for a twisted kinda warping sound I will resample the sound. on everything
But really, on anything that needs fattening/saturation. Mostly on kicks and snares, basses, sometimes hihats (mostly just the color knob).

On your productions specifically how do you get that, smooth glide between different bass sounds? Do you have all of the sounds on the same bus, so they are essential getting processed by the same distortion plugins and effects?
Its just the sounds are drastically different but have a similar character to them soo the transition is not so abrupt. Great song in your sig btw, ill be sure to follow.

Compress them together to limit the dynamic range, use the same reverb send to place all the sounds in the same space, derivate your sounds through resampling, fx automation, chopping the best parts and so on, neurofunk style.outdropt wrote:Towany,

Wouldn't that cause the sound to over lap itself, phasing some areas and boosting other?
If i were to go that route i would assume you need to mono, or at least narrow the stereo image of everything 500-800hz and below..
You would compress all in the same fashion, im assuming to tame the sounds so they loose some character, but also fit with the surrounding elements.
The resampling and whatnot i understand. Not trying to bite a style, just look for new production techniques

I usually make a bass patch that sounds pretty good to me and make it as clear and punchy as I can before I put anything on it. Then I put the effects on it to bring out the sound even more. Then I duplicate the track/sound and change up parameters on that sound so it changes a little bit or even a lot! I keep doing that till I have a good few basses in my arsenal. I don't compress or anything :/ which might be bad but I find that when I put sausage fattener on it it acts like a limiter/compressor but I could be completely wrong. Then I send all the basses to the same bus which has an EQ on it and then a compressor for sidechaining onlyoutdropt wrote:Towany,

early dubstep and dungeon is filled with reverberated basses, just make sure to EQ your send, hi pass it around 150~200hz and carefully sculpt the reverb removing unwanted frequencies. That explains why the bass sounds have the same character, so it doesnt throw off the song switching sounds rapidly.
For me i would make a few different bass patches but when i tried to switch between them there were "gaps" or too abrupt of a changea between sounds, which didnt sound good, so i stuck to a patch for an 8/16 bar loop, which limited my performance and became dull over time. Ill try some of the stuff stated here. Thanks guys!

I use Sausage Fattener on almost everything, although I only use it in very subtle ways. My Fatness knob never gets higher than 10%, most sounds like drums get only 2-5% of Fatness, other longer decaying instruments like synths and basses get a bit more, like 5-10%. This together with good EQ and mixdown does it for me!

I use it on both synth busses and drum busses, I hardly ever use it on single mixer channels, unless I want to quickly boost something very minor in a track.
Never tried it for "mastering" but I've read you can use it for that.
