if you lowpass his track at 100 hz it still peaks at like -2 db. i think alot of it has to do with how its mixed. the bass takes up the majority of the dynamic range, and appears to be a pure sine

deadly: how do you think trillian would fare for midrange?

Would you say he side chains his kicks or just has bare sub down there ... this is a very helpful observation btwdubesteppe wrote:if you lowpass his track at 100 hz it still peaks at like -2 db. i think alot of it has to do with how its mixed. the bass takes up the majority of the dynamic range, and appears to be a pure sine

Obviously theres some pitch shifting and maybe some layering slightly out of time to get the flam effect, but there's just something about it that I can't quite put my finger on that's just so satisfyingly crunchy and oozing with character that I hear in a lot of Mala/Digital Mystikz snares, and very few other artists seem to use it.

Re: Mala - tips and tricks
It's got some reverb. Maybe a transient shaper? And see how you EQ it.
EDIT: It might have a compressor after the reverb.

Re: Mala - tips and tricks
think its just layered/pitched, with a reverb with a long attack and short delay
and chorus
and varying degrees of delay. fuck I love dmz snares. all about the subtle automation
sample selection is key obviously
ps just got my plate of this back off someone thats had it for years.
mixed into I wait is incredible.
