Not too sure what this is all about but bigup on your show, I love being introduced to new tunes and you surely did that
Re: Why ya'll should be blessing up SubFM as much as you can
there's no alternative noways either, if you live in Wolverhampton (like me) you'd have to go Birmingham to support your 'local' scene.wub wrote:This is the most interesting point IMO. Kids aren't interested in supporting the local scene because they don't have to these days. Back in the mists of time, before the internet/file sharing/social networkinng was as big as it was, you had to get out there and get your demos in the hands of people who might like to listen to them.Mad EP wrote:I can tell you that the younger crop of djs is much less concerned with bringing up crews and supporting the scene.
I had to 'support the scene' as it were and foster relationships because there was no alternative. These days any fuckwit with an Internet connection can integrate themselves into a 'scene'.
if people had more time for labels like mine, then you'd see label nights and shit.
you have to give people time, support and encouragement to help build something larger than internet entity

Re: Why ya'll should be blessing up SubFM as much as you can
There is still the draw of interacting with a dj. I woke early-ish on Saturdays to lock into anti-social (RIP) cause when g double called out for requests there were always some dubs on my mind. But not everyone can be anti-socialhutyluty wrote:I listen to subfm sometimes but tbh i think the days of internet radio are dying. Why lock in live to a show when theres literally hundreds of free mixes around in the web to listen to at your pleasure.
Also, no offence to subfm but quite often the shows i listen to are just rinse shows from two months ago with a few dubs added in from the dj in question.
I dont exactly know what you were aiming for here but tbh your passive self-aggrandisement is getting kind of tiresome. Well done on having a show on sub fm which promotes everyone, congrats on playing the cello and having loads of releases, but you can go more than three posts without pointing these things out you know.
I listen to music i like, message people who im feeling and buy their music if its out, beg for 320s if it isn't. Then maybe put their songs in mixes. A lot of people do the same, just look at some of the threads bigging each other up throughout the forum.
Re: Why ya'll should be blessing up SubFM as much as you can
I don't even listen to dubstep these days really, but subfm is one of the few I'll tune into when I got the time to check out because of good selection and similar tastes from what I've always heard played.
Massive respect for holding it down and supporting new artists!

ever conisder that there isnt a local scene? being from the UK im sure that didnt really come to mind for you, but a lot of us make and play music on our own. I have 2 friends that like similar music to me, other than that, the scene is literally nonexistent for good edm in massachusetts. every dumb bitch is obssesed with electro house and every bro alike, its frustrating but true. i got decks recently and all i can play is vinyl so money is the real issue. if i had the money id love to play on sub fm but thats just not an option. i personally love sub.fm but i find most of the sets i want to listen to are at 2 or 3 in the morning on my time

I missed this thread.
Mad respect for SubFM, nothing even remotely forward thinking going on in my town.
At least SubFM and a couple others are pushing the sounds.

Re: Why ya'll should be blessing up SubFM as much as you can
Hello!
Sorry to drop a bit of a turd in the pool & then disappear... I was on holiday for the past week. (a very rare occurence, I assure you - I think I have been on holiday 3 times in the past 15 years)...
I appreciate the peeps coming out in the thread to support - but to be completely honest - most of you are missing the point. The main person who "got" what I was reaching at was Wub, but then again, like me, he is an old crusty geezer.
What I was trying to explain - was that many of the younger generation don't understand that it isn't about Soundcloud or Mixcloud hits... or showing respect in a thread... or whatever. These are are all fabrications of the past 5+ years that people think mean anything. They really don't. It is easy to click "Like" on FB, or post "Big Ups" on a thread or whatever... but more and more, it seems the days that people go out of their way to support what they believe in are numbered. And I mean - go out of one's way.
I'm not even talking about my show...but how many of you, who have had a track played on SubFM or Rinse or whatever... *continued* to promote the show that played you, even if you didn't have a track being played? I'm talking about - say show X played your track 2 months ago - how many of you try to rally the troops and promote to your own base and hype the new, upcoming show even if you aren't being played? That is what I am talking about. I remember the first time I got played on the radio - dude even lived in my neighborhood - but I didn't get played again for months... HOWEVER, I kept promoting his show every week - cos I knew he believed in what I valued - supporting the underground, even if the underground wasn't *me* every week. That is what it comes down to - and the reason I bring this up has nothing to do with my own show... I might retire soon, I might not... I haven't decided.
BUT - what I can guarantee is... that there are fewer and fewer old schoolers like me left. Most kids who get a radio spot will play the tracks that are already popular so that their show is popular from day 1. That's great & all... but for a forum where people are trying to figure out how to get a break once they have crafted dope tunes... this is an important lesson. If there is a DJ or radio station or whatever that is dedicated to unsigned cats and uses their cred to spread around to everybody else... it is a 2-way street. You shouldn't just support them when they support you, you should support them because they are doing the right thing... Otherwise, you will be left with ONLY djs and stations that play the pre-approved popular stuff.. and then there will be grumbling about why no one ever supports the underground anymore.
Sound familiar?

1) I am not from the UK. I live in the UK - but I am from Iowa.ever conisder that there isnt a local scene? being from the UK im sure that didnt really come to mind for you
2) Even when I lived in Chicago, Montreal, & NYC - I always had tastes outside of the various crews I ran with. There is something to be said for being different. Embrace it, rather than use it as an excuse...but a lot of us make and play music on our own. I have 2 friends that like similar music to me..
3) Where in MA are you? Cos I can tell you that there is some AMAZING stuff happening in MA. Do you know of Beat Research in Boston? I bet you it is closer to where you live than me when I first played their show when I lived in NYC. I have played there twice - DJ Flack has been a part of it since the Toneburst days... DJ C is now in Chicago - but now Wayne&Wax is the other co-curator. Get up your game and then get in touch with them. I got in with their crew by simply sending them an email and sending em my tunes.the scene is literally nonexistent for good edm in massachusetts. every dumb bitch is obssesed with electro house and every bro alike, its frustrating but true.

4) Sorry - but how is money an issue? I don't even have decks - and I have been on Sub.FM for over 3 years. Whistla isn't about "normal" dubstep/garage/wonky/whatever djs... he wants djs who know how to bring something different. If you find a unique voice, I bet that Whistla will get interested.i got decks recently and all i can play is vinyl so money is the real issue. if i had the money id love to play on sub fm but thats just not an option.

Re: Why ya'll should be blessing up SubFM as much as you can
thanks for the info about beat research i hadnt heard of it before! about money being an issue... how can i play tunes that i dont own? and after shipping prices most records are $10+ a piece. until i get some way to play digital im stuck paying the big bucks, and the only way to play digital is to pay even bigger bucks. on top of that, didnt you say dj's pay to play on sub.fm? dont take this as complaining, im just want you to see where im coming from. right now i only have about 10 records, just grabbed another 20 from ck trust off the forums, and thats hardly enough to play a few slightly varied sets if that :/
:Q
ps: similar to bassic boston, beat research plays at good life which is a 21+ club, wouldnt be able to get in unless i was spinning.
