although i agree with this, you have to keep in mind that dusbtep a very special genre with special conventions. it's so far away from house or techno that you have to give people time to adjust to it. some may like it over time and some never will.milesNL wrote:There is so much quality stuff out there and so many new releases coming up..Kurups wrote: it shouldnt bother me.
If your friends/people don't bother, why would you?
I personally don't try to convert people. Even if someone asks me, I don't expect anyone to be as excited as I am about a genre. If they are, great!

^ Naughty language.

For instance, in so-called 'primitive' societies, different musical forms are connected to specific occasions - birth, death, marriage, rites of passage; sometimes it's designed to put someone in a contemplative, spiritual headspace (trance experiences) and sometimes it's designed to move your body. Sometimes those two experiences are one and the same.
There's been an interesting trend in Western popular music over the last 75 years at least where something starts as dance music, then gets co-opted by mainstream pop, then next reorganizes itself as "art" or "heady" music and to a degree rejects the bodily aspects (danceability), and then factionalizes and re-invents itself once more as dance music, spawning the next generation of such mutations. It happened so many times I won't try to name 'em all, but jazz, rock n' roll, and hip hop all come to mind.

And this gets into the whole "functional imperative" - i.e. why the music was made in the first place, what social function it fulfilled. Some music is made for specific social contexts; other music is made solely for mass consumption by individuals.DIGIPLAST wrote:although i agree with this, you have to keep in mind that dusbtep a very special genre with special conventions. it's so far away from house or techno that you have to give people time to adjust to it. some may like it over time and some never will.

It doesn't bother me that they don't like it or if they hate it. I could care less they really don't know what they're missing and they can continue living their lives in a bubble of shit taste.
But it really gets me pissed when they do the whole bullshit arguement that happens all the time.
Some douchebag full of himself guitarist goes on about how its not real music and requires no talent pushing play, etc.
Now that's the shit that gets me going. Especially when they talk highly of themselves for playing in a 90's cover band at bars.
Now shit people who know me know I play a variety of instruments and studied jazz performance for a bit as well as produce (or at least try to) dubstep. I've even had some idiots tell me even if I use techniques I learned from guitar or trombone or jazz or whatever music theory I know they've said its only "real" music if I play it and if I use it for dubstep its not "real" music because I'm not playing it. What the fuck is "fake" music? I guess Igor Stravisnky's Rite of Spring isn't real music and required no talent to compose since he doesn't actually play it himself. Its not about performing its about composing something they wouldn't know about since they only play bad covers of some old dude's song.
Meanwhile these assholes are proud of themself for playing 4 simple chords over and over. If you're gonna argue at least play something with substance.

I swear these idiots would argue that if someone drew a picture with a pen its not a "real" picture because real artists only use pencils.
Its not about the tool used by the artist its about what the artist creates in the end.

Re: There's so much dubstep hate out there right now
It does suck to feel like a scene and art that you care deeply about has been, in a sense, co-opted. Just a few years ago people/my friends reactions to me telling them I was listening to a dubstep track would be, "what's that?". Which was awesome because this would always open the door to let me introduce them to what dubstep was, listing artists, suggesting mixtapes, etc.
Now with the genre gaining so much exposure I don't even bother telling people I listen to it because they immediately dismiss as "robot farts" and the like because thats most likely the sounds they've been exposed to. I mean, how could I play Horsepower Productions or an old Hatcha mix and convince someone who's only heard Datsik and Skrillex that this is where dubstep came from?
That being said while I was upset and frustrated for a short time, I realized there's way better directions to channel your energy towards than being angry and upset with people. If anything it's been good for the scene because its forced the best producers back underground and has spawned some really interesting sounds. There's a lot to be excited about at present and for the future.
