I'm a fan of the avant garde - If you are not moving forward than what are you doing?

Even examining the past can be a way of moving forward - if you are discovering something new within it.



Also - when you are talking about a historical body of work - in order for the next generation to move forward
Do they have to be knowledgable about what is already there...?

Futurists would say no - they say burn all the libraries and go with what is relevent right now.

Even if that is repeting what has been done.

That all makes sense and provides a strong point; you have to observe the past without necessarily repeating it. If you happen to strike something clearly novel, for a time it can be "avant garde" because people don't know what it is (being truely novel), but in the repetition of the novel act lies disdain and derogation of the masses for having repeated it. I see it in these threads all the time (not that there's anything wrong with that).

the question should'nt be: what is considered music, what is considered art, what is considered avant garde...?

the question should be: in what kind of society do we want to live and how can we achieve it? and how can we use music and art as a way of communication.

real avant garde artists are sick of the hypes.
