House Genres

Okay, I've been going at it for a while. I don't listen to house music all that much, but I have always wanted to know about the types of house music. Like I know there is deep house and progressive house, but I don't really know the difference between them... Maybe if someone knows a helpful link? Or some brief examples for some of the genres? Thanks!

Listen to an early example of Deep House such as Jungle wonz the Jungle or the Truth - Open Our Eyes (both produced by Marshall Jefferson) You could even check some of the deeper Theo Parrish Productions and then listen to tracks like Gat Dacor Passion or Left-field not forgotten which were both progressive house. Also check labels like Guerrilla and cowboy

To Me Deep House had (and has) feeling, funk and a groove. Progressive house a UK (in the main funkless) creation (lots of dubby and organ sounds with clean production ) was an example of producers trying to be different and most of what I heard did nothing for me. That said the Future Sounds of London Mix of Praise by Inner City I did rate!

As for Genres of house there has been so much fragmentation that in all honesty I wouldn't pay too much attention to it- Its either good dance music (yes House is DANCE music) or its not (to me that's hard house,trance, rave) .. The best House\Garage\Techno and derivatives there of whether old or new all contain a certain groove or edge to it sure tempos play a part but its music that works dancefloors and in my opinion should not necessarily be played as seperate entities.

Check the releases on rush hour- lots of quality new release house, previously unreleased Chicago House and of course the Nu Groove comp is on that label

As for spoken vocal tracks Its just house

I compiled this list some time ago after hearing that Don Morris tune in the groove it’s raw, typical Chicago style house, it got me thinking about spoken vocal tracks and I’ve come up with these

The spoken house tracks mainly came out of Chicago and today you can hear poetry over house by artists such as Ursula Rucker, Rainy Payne and Roland Clarke to name 3
