I would try to fill the gaps you have, the bass is great but you have a lot of gitches and between each one is some silence. Its not that bad till all of a sudden you get consecutive glitches and you hear each individual one. A simple pad or some reverb would suffice to fix it, nothing much a quick decay reverb or a low background spacey pad would be good.@Hero: Ok, my last 3 post were all feedback for you guys on last page
I would like a 2nd ear on this mix before i go in get the master done, thx guys

Re: WIPs/unfinished tunes for feedback * no finished tunes *
Actually I just EQ'd the sub bass so no sounds above about 200 HZ would be audible, and increased its volume. It made the waveform fatter because the sub never shuts upmthrfnk wrote:Fair do's man, in your track, the basses and midrange are totally covering your drums. The forum has lots of threads on how to EQ your track properly so everything has it's place, also consider sidechaining. For punch you'll want to look into compression and transient shaping on your drums. The track has some really nice ideas though, good and original, just try to improve the mixdown.Kilo Graham wrote:Hey, I just got here bro. Also I've been posting in some other threads. Once I get back from work in a few hours and have audio I will listen, I just hoped to get some comments/feedback in time for me to use it...mthrfnk wrote:Guys the idea of this thread is to give feedback to at least 3 other people first, and in return you get some yourself.Kilo Graham wrote:http://soundcloud.com/kilo_graham/it-do ... hing-wip-6
I've been working on this thing for way too long. It's been the track that I'm learning new techniques on. What I'm specifically trying to look at is the drums, and why they don't sound very crisp or exciting. Is it the composition? The samples? Something with EQ? Any tips or general commentary would be nice.
It's swing/dubstep/idk.
Oh and I checked your soundcloud, it looks like between your WIP 4/5 and that #6 you posted, you've compressed and/or limited the master - compressing and limiting a track that isn't mixed well enough will also cause your drums to lose punch as the rest of the track dynamics are generally made louder thus competing with the drums. Be careful with your limiter

After listening a couple times, I think you could use more use of silence, or at least the absence of sound in a frequency range, to kind of bring out the presence of those sounds in the rest of the track. As it is, we're kind of listening to a full range constantly, it seems. It would also make the bit after the build up feel more important. Also the white noise build up felt a little forced, it maybe starts out too loud or not filtered enough. I don't have any low end to test it on unless I take it out to the car so I can't comment on that.ill mindset wrote:A little something I've been working on. Still working on a lead melody and some variation in the build up. Lemme know how the low end sounds please.

The beginning, why bother with the white noise? Why not just jump straight into that nice piano section? As it is I thought my sound was broken until about 4 seconds in. If it's because it'll be a transition between other tracks, that makes sense and you can ignore that comment, but yeah. Is this as long as the track is going to be?acidsamurai wrote:Edit: Left feedback, I truly apologize I try and lurk the forums as much as I can but I completely browsed right over that.
Been working on a little filler track (Hopefully I can get a promo CD going one day) and wanted to see if everything is sitting right in the mix and if the structure seems pretty solid to you guys Soundcloud
I think the composition could be a little bolder, especially after the build up. There's essentially 2 bars, then a different two bars, and so on and so forth, which is fine but you could maybe use some inversions or some rhythmic changes? It does do that once it's at about halfway through, so it's probably fine anyway. I think you're right about the screechy bit, though it'd be alright as an accent lead in a call and response kind of way (one lead does some, the other kind of says the same theme).mthrfnk wrote:Update on my new track (it's house not dubstep), not sure about the lead synth - think imma change it since it's too screechy, but I've tried to improve the mix- thoughts?
cool progression going on but it really needs much stronger percussion. Layer the kick get that clap pumping.... anyways i think you could get a bit more creative on the bassline but all in all good arrangement mate.

thanks for the feedback! yeah i'd be more than happy to hook up the .wav, i might change up one of the snares but here's the song as-is, it's a 24-bit wav and even though it's 24-bit i went ahead and applied POW-r2 dither. here's the linkHero wrote:love the uplifting feel mane, very happy an chill lyrics. : Well I started off remixing a heavy electro house track and was going to drop right into a thick synthy lead with subs on but then I went south and made this up. Do you think I should kill the whole intro or leave the riser and just remove the bass? And yeah its going to just be a small filler song, I made a longer song of the same type ( http://soundcloud.com/carbonkiller/from-the-depths ) and just felt it wasn't enough so I made this. Did you think the song deserved more time?@ Kilo Graham: The beginning, why bother with the white noise? Why not just jump straight into that nice piano section? I'm not sure it really "deserves" more time, at least not just like another repetition of the chorus/hook, because it has plenty of that. Maybe some "verse" like sections where different things happen could be worth doing, but it might be a little long as filler.acidsamurai wrote:: Well I started off remixing a heavy electro house track and was going to drop right into a thick synthy lead with subs on but then I went south and made this up. As far as the white noise/riser goes, I'd get rid of it. White noise with no context just doesn't do the same work, you know? Alone, in the intro like it was, dropping out to piano, it felt out of place and unnecessary. As far as "From the Depths" goes, if that's what you could make this little filler track into it's worth a shot because it's good, and would be good even if you didn't have the Bon Iver vocals on it. Could be worth fleshing out this little filler track into a fully fledged original piece in the style you made the Bon Iver remix, eh? Especially if you're making EP material.
And maybe take a section of the Bon Iver remix that wouldn't get you in trouble, and make some filler for your EP?

I feel like I have no problem writing drops. But, I suck at writing songs -- what do you think? I'd love to collab with someone who has the opposite problem.

I actually feel the other way about the intro. don't like it. the build up and drop is cool, maybe you should throw some reverb or chorus on the growls in the intro making a little less harsh so that when it hits at the drop its something you've never felt before...yah know?
rymebox wrote:@mthrfnk Sounds alright, but the snare being offset is a tad irritating. The kick could use a little more punch/high end, but I really dig the chords!
@BudSpencertron That's funky as shit! Sounds super french haha. The only thing I would really change if I had to would be the claps/snare being a little more punchy but sounds pretty sick
@Kongret I like the background synths, but I think the main bassline needs to be a little more present.
In any case, here's my WIP: Soundcloud

@Hero: I feel like too much of your composition is panned dead center. I would give your midrange some stereo width or pan some of your synths one side or the other. I think that would help give some overall dynamics to your track. The kick and snare sound a little quiet in the mix. I think you could bring them up a bunch and perhaps give them some sharper compression / EQ work. The vocals shots, in contrast, are a little too loud I think. But yeah, I'd say the first thing that jumps out to me is the panning. I think you could use the stereo field a little better. But with all that said, I really dig the bass riffs and beat. Its a really cool, funky track. Good luck on the final mixdown.
@AcidSamurai: Loving that beat man. Super heavy stuff. The drums sound great. I'd maybe give the keys at the beginning some more verb just to let them breathe a bit. This is really dope though -- the second beat that comes in is awesome. I'd give the fade out a few more measures though, just cuz it seems to end a little abruptly. A really sick track overall. I'd develop it some more, i think its too cool to just be a filler track
@Ill Mindset: I think the snare could use some reverb on it, cuz it sits a little too upfront in the mix at the moment. That and make it have a sharper attack with some compression. The buildup is really well done and the drop is SICK! I think your midrange bass and the arp synth might be competing for space though -- particularly the arp synth could use some EQing, cuz i think it has a lot of unnecessary low end in it. Maybe just keep the midrange bass more centered instead of spread out so much. That way, the only think occupying the far left /right channels is the arp synth. Really great melody and composition, I just think the mixdown needs a bit of work to tighten things up. The low end just sounds a little muddy / confused at the moment.

almost skate 100: wtf this is sick man, really different, all the textures and and sub. my first thought was the hats could come up a little. other than that good stuff. kinda reminds my of heyoka...
noctuaide: dont post without leaving feedback. nice tune sounding fat and tight.
rymebox: i think the tune sounds good. dont like this style. some thins in this tune need to come down, the mids slightly, and the epis synth in the middle. so the drums can punch threw a bit more.
some cheesy beat im on atm

Left feedback as soundcloud comments.

There is only one drum pattern at the moment, varying them up now (I make one pattern to write to then make more after I'm basically done writing the rest of the track)
-Edit- Finished the track, thanks for the feedback

Brothulhu: Wow love that sub bass and that mid eastern feel. Has a sweet groove to it. Really nice tune nothing to complain about for me. Looking forward to the finished product!
Travis Baker: Sick! Im loving all this ambient stuff everyones getting back into really exciting! Your sub is a little too overwhelming though (might just be my shitty setup though so take that with a grain of salt) I would also try changing up the drum patter a teeny tiny but somehow, other than that good stuff!
almostskate100: Liking the watery bass sounds. The only thing I suggest its lowering the drums a bit and bring up those background pads you have going every now and than.
Heres a tune im working on, was wondering what I can do to sort of make it more interesting. let me know what you guys think!

I was actually thinking that since I really used only a few clips of the song I may be able to use it as my own (98% of it is really self mixed besides the violin and vocal stems). But yeah I think I may cut the intro and go right into the piano like you said, it sounds pretty fluid like that for a quick little filler track. I figure if I have my other track and this one side by side then the fact that its only like two minutes won't matter much on a CD since From the Depths is about six minutes anyway.Kilo Graham wrote:I'm not sure it really "deserves" more time, at least not just like another repetition of the chorus/hook, because it has plenty of that. @GuitarJon I think the stuttered effect kind of throws off the whole melodic part at the start. after that its pretty sick man. i think basses could use something to mesh a bit more with each other maybe its just something to do with the mixing.
@rymebox gna be honest. at the start i was thinking what the fuck is this... but the drop is pretty sick man. i think the only problem with this is that the first part is too long and sounds like a completely different track lol.
@Burgeamon funky as fuck vibes on this. finding this hard to fault. the only thing i could think of is adding some more in the first section... maybe some progressed distortion or bit crushing over the whole section? just and idea i dno. i think all it needs is some good mastering and it would be pretty big.

@Crowsteppa, nice melody, but the synth is way to high at some points i think. Bass feels nice, but the kicks a bit loud in the mix. Lead synth needs some beefing up, and it feels like there should be something m ore in this track, try adding in a deep pad at some parts
@ant man: sick tune bro! id suggest adding in more effects and stuff, maybe a reverbed vocal breath? also at some parts in the bass melody, it gets a bit harsh, i mean like the melody that repeats twice, first time its clean and dark, second time its harsh but still dark, idk if you understand what i mean by this, sorry i cant explain it better. Great job tho! reminds me of that benga tune 10 tons heavy
Old skool vibes
@Almostskate100: nasty tune man
i thing you should add a little something to the bass, like another oscillator with a different, but similar waveform, and have that alternate with the one you already have sometimes to keep it changing. Drums are too loud as well, great ideas in the tune man!

@acid samurai, sick as hell drums! glitch bass need to be a bit louder i think, and the piano could be EQd to fit in the mix better.

@rhymebox: bassline is sickkk!!! intro needs some work put into it though, and im not so sure about the growls in the intro.. other than that, great work!
