Rappers, and yes this definitely applies to most rappers (and more than it does to other musicians), have this thing that once they get successful, they stop giving a fuck and their quality control disappears to the point where they might as well record themselves farting over a DJ Premier rip-off beat and release it. They 'got the props' they want so they might as well half ass it.

Check out a rap forum to see how they get away with it. 90% of the discussions on there isn't about the music or rapping, but who's fucking who, who's beefing with who and who's realer than who. So when one rapper starts beefing with another, they feel morally OBLIGED to mindlessly go along with it and have their back against the other.

Hip-hop producers too btw. Madlib used to be mad consistent and have some ill beats. His shit with Tha Alkaholiks... the Lootpack, a lot of his remixes, etc. Then after his success with the Blue Note thing his collab with Dilla came out and the dude blew up. Then you had a 'Another Madlib Invazion' about every other week where most of his beats just sounded like half-assed leftover beats from previous sessions. Who cares doe, dude got the props right?

Odd Future just got popular too fast, before any of them really found their voices. Tyler occasionally, by accident, stumbles on a good beat and people buy his shit so he thinks he's some top producer. So why bother improving yourself?

this I can agree with. In that sense, Burial isn't even in my top 5 I think as far as "evoking emotion" goes. I always considered it more a fresh look on garage from a guy who deffo pursued his own style. His ambient tunes are perhaps more fitting of that "emotional" label but aren't unique in any way.

But I don't know, people who are in this category of music, you know, presenting a new edge (and in '05 / '06 this was deffo a new angle) and also put some melodic (emotional if you will) quality in their music, people start to 'relate' to it on obnoxious levels. And that in turn gets you the overrated tag much quicker, as a sort of anti-movement.

I can understand people calling Burial overrated. But for me personally, I draw a line throughout an artists entire discography and base your judgement on that average and for me, that line is still very high (I loved the last EP, much more than Street Halo which was boring I agree). So I don't consider myself overrating him but now I'm thinking, in the broad sense, he is probably overrated. I know where to place his music in my collection. He won't be at number one, but he's up there for sure.

All music can evoke emotionally equally. Just not in everyone. When people dig one thing and call it 'full of emotion' and then hate something else for having 'no emotion' I always get a little bit on edge. It just seems SO arrogant of me to make such statements about music. Like someone's a top authority on what constitutes 'emotion' in music, almost a way for someone to legitemize their own tastes or something.

Wasn't about anything in particular anyone here said or aimed at anyone tbh, just brainstorming.

Music isn't 'emotion'. Emotion happens between your ears. The way we perceive things and feel things differs from person to person. So when we think that something sounds 'emotional', we're merely projecting OUR feelings and interpretations on it. This is why I hate when people legitemize their own tastes over others', heh.

Burial has film samples in his music
what is of value and wisdom for one man seems nonsense to another.

Bible turned crappy when it reached the new testament. It's all about the old skool man, the old testament. Much like rave music isn't any good if newer than '95. :h: praise.

I have big love for OF. Some seriously talented guys. Earl's debut and Bastard are both modern classics in my book.

Also, Mike G doesn't get enough credit. Ali was awesome.

I dig Mike G's flow but he gets some lame ass beats. Earl's great too but also, most of the beats are shiity as hell.

dubfordessert wrote:smashing pumpkins GAAAAHHH Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness could have been a single LP release and it would have saved everyone a lot of time.

Gish and Adore are worth mentioning, but after 4 SP albums (not gonna say a word against Siamese Dream)i really feel I've given billy corgan enough of my life

Smashing.pumpkins have many more.than 4 albums. Machina II was great as was zeitgeist

MCIs is a masterpiece and one of the best double albums ever

Anywho my overrated mentions: nevermind: seriously wasn't a.big deal till he died. It was a big album but not the epic it was.made.out to be. Most people who were 12 or older in 94 give more love to the.pixies

Second mention: Paul's boutique- 3 great tunes.rest is.meh

Zeitgeist had some awesome tunes on it, but calling it great is a stretch.

It grew on me. Easily Jimmy's best drumming since mcis era. Bleeding the orchid was.better than anything on either machina.

Odd future suck

All their early stuff had like one or two good tunes on max

Tyler's persona now is impossibly annoying too.

I honestly haven't listened to Mellon Collie, so I probably can't really comment on this too well. Been meaning to do so for some time now...just never got around to it.

Siamese Dream is great. The intro to Hummer :U:
