Think he meant GM/General MIDI sounds. They are a bit cheese, but some of them have their place.
When talking about virtual instruments though, I like to keep things mostly MIDI unless I'm going for crazy resampled sounds, but even then I find with current CPUs you can have crazy effects chains without resampling. Except when it comes to a handful of software that just destroy CPUs. Diva comes to mind. I've also had some problems with Arturia software like MinimoogV... playing chords often pushes software to its limits. Computers don't seem to handle chords too well.
