Need new headphones

Post by Nologix » Sat Aug 18, 2012 2:23 pm

Hey,

I need some buy-recommendations. I don't have a clue about the headphone market. So I decided to ask here, what I need are headphones for producing. And, are there headphones which can be used for producing AND for casual stuff like gaming or listening to music? I guess these won't be too good then but tell me please.

My financial limit is quite low, I cannot spend too much. I'd set the limit to 150€. I know I won't get too good ones for that price, yea....

I can't find anything about someone searching headphones for both producing and allday usage. :/

Just look at the threads about producing and see if people say the headphones are comfy or not

Is it worth to pay 50€ more for the AKG K271 MKII? I read a review where someone compared the hd380pro to the AKG K271 MKII saying one should buy the AKGs, the Sennheiser HD 380 Pro is way too loud in the bass frequencies.

AND, is it possible to use these for gaming too?

No, the 380 pro are probably better for production. I have a pair and they are really, really good. Nice and flat, closed cans too. Besides it's not too loud in the bass frequencies, they're actually pretty quiet in regards to bass compared to non mastering headphones like beats or skullcandies or whatever. I don't know where he got that info.

EDIT: And sure you can use it for gaming. I do on occasion but I usually prefer my speakers for the positional audio effects.

I have been producing music - hiphop, house, bass music - in and out of headphones for about ten years. Used AKGs, Beyerdynamics and Sennheisers. My previous set - Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro was by FAR my favorite - but.... I lost them, and had to get some cheaper ones because of bad cash flow, and went for the Sennheiser hd25II and they are AWESOME. Excellent sub!! Not so clear and detailed as the DT990´s, but very very good..

Go for Beyerdynamic DT770, 990 or Sennheiser HD25 is my best suggestion :)

After watching some reviews of all the suggested ones I decided to just go for the Sennheiser HD 380 Pro. I'm sure I won't regret this.
Just bought them for 99€/122$. Can't wait to receive them and finally get some good sound and to finally be able to mix well. :)

i use beats for mastering and EQing. its heavy on the lows but it works well with my rokits. i think the idea is to have a system that can pick up any range. alot of producers/masters' use several sets of speakers/headphones to get better representation of their work.

i think AKG is a good balanced brand. my buddy uses pioneer hdjs and they are bad :( they dont pick up lows too well, which i find counter-intuitive for dubstep production?

Yea it's from a German site that has price sinkings at a lot of items at the moment. I don't know how they manage to cut the prices so much, but I like it lol.

So, they arrived me today, listened to some songs.
Very nice and clear sounds, especially in the lows. A lot of details can be heard. Noticed some small details in vex'd - Thunder for example that I've never heard before with my cheaper headphones. Quite nice. And I can already say they sound quite linear.

Regarding the allday usage, I guess for listening to music you would recommend EQ'ing a bit, or? Can you recommend some general EQ'ing for linear headphones that makes them better for listening to music for the entertainment side of it and not for the producing side?

Don't do it.

You're just going to be constantly moving the goal posts. Part of being able to use headphones or monitors for mixing is knowing how things should sound on them. That is why when one gets a new pair of cans or monitors, before doing any mixing, they should listen to their record collection non-stop for a while.. that way you get to know them. If you are EQ'ing back and forth between mixing and casual listening, your ears will lose their reference point.

I get your point, sounds plausible.
So basically it's "learning how things sound "raw"/unedited"?

No - it is hearing them how they are meant to be heard.

If you take whatever 12" or cd... and you automatically slap on a bass boost, you are distorting what both the original artist/producer & mastering engineer worked very hard to achieve. Nothing raw or unedited about that in the slightest.
