Distorted guitars

Post by outbound » Tue Aug 21, 2012 7:39 am

Helllo, it feels like it's been a while!

Atm I'm looking into some chugging electric guitar samples. Specifically the one's that seem to find there way into a lot of chase and status' productions (hypest hype etc) Was wondering if there are any decent sample libraries /instruments out there that people recognise these being used from or whether it's more likely sampled from a track. If anybody has any info it would be much appreciated!

Are you wanting guitar samples to distort yourself, or guitar samples that have already been distorted?

Pretty sure Chase and Status will have recorded their own guitars

Yeah they definately record their own riffs. They made some song that they called 'Chase and Status just bought a guitar mix', and they also do little guitar solos here and there. No way they're sampling that.

The guitar is a pretty easy instrument to play live for a track like that if you want though. Heavily distorted chugging riffs like that don't require too much skill and it's very easy to record a guitar into a computer.

Vengeance packs have key labelled guitar strums. Loopmasters also has a few guitar packs, and Freesound has some stuff too.

chase and status actually synthesize alot of the parts which sound like distorted guitars, obviously they do use real guitars here and there for little riffs or solos but i would be very suprised if any of those were sampled.

Why not go the Guitar rig route?

I've so far recorded in some parts and used Guitar rig to get some fairly passable results. They are however a long way off decent guitar recordings from good quality, hi gain amps (5150's, Diesel etc) and for the return I don't know if I can justify investing that much money into an amp... Just yet :)

It is always better to record a real amp, but Guitar rig can sound good enough in some instances. The most important thing is to record at least 2 good takes of everything and pan the different versions hard left and right on separate channels.

protip: You can get interesting effects by doubling up guitar rig, there will be alot of background noise while not playing so just resample your playing to get rid of it

just record them yourself if you can't find a sample that works. preferable with a good sounding guitar and amp. Do some research before on how to do it (get an sm57 and put it directly on the speaker in between the cone and driver basically)

Spend time getting a good tone, don't distort too much (unless thats what you're going for). Most guitars in EDM sound like shit because usually no one knows how to record them properly.
