@artifunke you are actually retarded.
If you have latency issues, you're not good with it
If latency becomes a problem, it will affect your performance.
these two comments are not the same.

being good is one thing, performing well is another.

you can be good at something, but still perform like shit.

@basic

you know i meant someone literally turning up with just a laptop that has vdj on it (not a full setup & definitely not dj spinn)

Exactly, what don't you get? The two are connected and it's as simple as that. If you can deejay with it, by all means do it.
You don't have to call me retarded.

I'd be unhappy if I was out and the DJ was using virtual DJ,but I feel the same about traktor and any if those controllers.

My bad, but thats not a once again statement, last time you made ti sound like you were talking about ALL people who just use VDJ without hardware.

I run Mixxx now :t:

500 bucks for my CDJs was a really good thing.

Mixxx's next distribution will be immense - they solved the multiple deck issue by making different instances connect using JACK's midi patcher... So for us linux users, this means infinite instances of mixxx, however many our pc's can handle, all on a master clock. Whole new world of intuitive live looping imo.

I just started learning live performing / djing in ableton and what I'm loving about it is the sandbox feel, even if you are using someone else script it's easy as hell to edit it and you can always find a more efficient /creative way of doing things. Can't wait until I have money to buy a ms pinky system and max4live. I really love and respect vinyl and cdjs, but I feel that I get so much more control and in depth customization when using Ableton.

edit: grammar

I've got a semi-related question,
I used to DJ quite a fair bit, but I used strictly vinyl - then children and life etc. not having the room I once used to have, resulted in me having to get rid of my turtables.
I would love to get back into DJ'ing but I want to do it properly, I don't want to candy ass program doing all my beat matching for me as that's just purely cheating and wasting a skill I spent years honing. Are there any controller/software packages that will allow me to do this?
I've seen some controllers with 'pitch' on it, but how well do they work in comparison to a turntable?
I've looked at countless different products, but all their demonstration videos show is how you can do a 4bar loop ting and make funny noises.

traktor scratch pro, scratch live and ableton + ms pinky are all DVS systems that should fulfill your needs.

Are i-pods actually capable of beat/key-matching? I see it stated in every software DJ v 'traditional' DJ debate on here (about every 3rd thread) that VDJ might as well just be an ipod.

Anyway. I agree with Mad EP's sentiment that if you make good sounds happen, that's (more or less) all that matters. But people do seem to care a whole fucking lot about what software/whatever you're using.

If a DJ is using some mad skills to do their thing, then that is great. Unless there really is a magic button on VDJ that selects your tracks, selects what tunes go together, picks the right key, picks the right moments and beat-matches all your tunes, then yeah, that's a bit lame.

I just think that all these controllers are getting further and further away from what mixing is all about, maybe it's snobbish of me but I get annoyed when I see someone playing out on them.

And what is Mixing/DJing all about to you, to me it's communicating with the audience and if that uses a controller or CDJ's who cares as long as it's well done. The DJ should use whatever he has the most fun using and is the best at.

Not having a screen in front of you, knowing your tunes well enough so you don't have digits written down saying when to bring tunes in etc. I don't have a problem with cdjs, it's the all in one controllers that I dislike.

...I've never seen anyone play with a log of digits to say when to bring in various tunes...

..but even if I did - playing Devil's Advocate - is that any different than vinyl DJs who mark their wax so they know where certain breaks or samples come in?

I didn't know you could mark vinyls, but even so I think it is different, comparing analog and digital is quite far fetched.
I think soon, if not already, anyone will be able to buy one of these controllers and learn to DJ flawlessly in a ridiculously short time. Maybe some people think that's a good thing tho.

thats already happened

fact of the matter is people are going to pay their $$$ to be entertained... whether its with vinyl records spinning or 1 software controller, if you give the crowd what they want (that varies from show to show and town to town) nothing else matters

for every 1 music snob (not a derogatory term) like the people ITT there are 100 people there just to get shitfaced and have a good time

personally.... id rather see someone who makes their own tunes playing out on a controller than someone who uses CDJs and knows how to beatmatch two songs into each other every 3-5 minutes... thats not rocket science and thats what most "DJ's" I see doing

i just hate when people make it seem like the only skill needed to be a dj is beatmatching
