Collabing over dropbox

Post by RandoRando » Fri Aug 31, 2012 1:23 pm

or just collabing in general, how do you guys go about doing it?

Me and Rekon are working on a track, luckily we are both in ableton.

So I started the tuune with some drums and did collect all and save, and saved it directly to the dropbox folder. Now when he goes to work on it he opens the ALS from the DB folder and all the samples load cause i did collect all.

NOW when he is done, he will do collect all and save and it should put all his bounced down samples into the "samples" folder in the white ableton folder right?

It seems to be working now but it was doing that at first for us.

and generally speaking how do you guys do it? one guy works on it for a week or so? a day?

we were just talking on skype and be able to listens to each others speakers and say "yeah that sounds good" to the person working on it...

:dunce:

I guess that's one of the easier ways to do it. FL has a similiar feature where you can save the project and the samples as a ZIP-file. I guess you can also bounce down to MP3 and then kinda remix each other's stuff. You'd need to finish up a whole section or so before you could send it back effectively though.

I kind of see the need for a dedicated service or maybe even a whole DAW (cloud-based production anyone? Maybe with faster connections) for this, as the internet is bringing us musicians together.

In all the collabs I've done so far we just bounced to audio and loaded the audio into our DAWs...we kept adding things/subtracting things until we were ready for mixing then one or the other got all the separate stems and mixed the tune. Honestly trying to deal with project files, patches, using the same FX and VSTs etc seems like an unnecessary hassle. But that's just my opinion.

before you collect all and save, be sure to go to view>file manager>mangage project(maybe its set, idr) then go to show unused files and delete whatever you see.

This will help keep the size down
