Re: Son of Tuna (the thread formerly known as Tuna Week)

Post by Murder Musket » Sun Sep 02, 2012 10:22 pm

Sent in my tune, entitled Walrus Carcass. I guess ill be the first to explain how my tune sounds abandoned.

The majority of elements in my tune are heavily delayed and reverberated, which gives it a sort of distant feel. I also spent allot of time creating these weird delayed effects which I hope have sort of a lonely, abandoned feel. The sort of jazzy break in the middle is pretty out of place, but I like to think it represents a sense of discovery that contrasts the slightly dissonant, lonely themes in most of the tune. I'm not going to lie, I had a hard time conveying this theme. Definitely not my best work, but hopefully you guys like it.

2 minutes is all you need if you're arranging your tune like zomby :W:

My tune is abandoned because the sample I used. I go digging for vinyl sometimes in this flea market in North Versailles, just outside McKeesport. The market is put in this abandoned movie theater and stores are either set up in the back parking lot, or people put up their goods in big rooms that used to house screens. There is one big old dude there who sells HIS vinyl that he's accumulated and its nearly filling an entire theater. His prices are usually steep but he has a lot of Jazz vinyl and has a lot of Ahmad Jamal vinyl. I talk to him everytime I'm in there and he usually yells at me to buy more. Anytime you bring him a record to buy he'll tell you how many times he's seen them live, and sometimes will tell you about the time he met them etc... He himself is abandoned because his kids no longer stay in touch with him, he said he wanted to leave his music to his children but they're unappreciative of him so he tries to sell it all. Anytime I leave with less than 5 albums he'll start digging up more and more hidden boxes and pleads w/ me to stay and look through. Sometimes I feel bad I have to leave. But the Ahmad Jamal album I found the sample on wasn't in the Jazz boxes on the front counter. It was in one the hidden boxes he dug up. So the tune itself might not sound abandoned, but that's how I interpreted it.

Operations abandoned, this tune sits on a nuclear site weathered in the years. Site 4-b collides with itself internally to paint a picture of what it once was.

Now my write up on why it fits the theme. I decided to start with a descending chord progression so that it would feel like the notes are moving away from it's roots. I tried to make it sound a little sad and whiny due to being abandoned. I also decided to go with simple drums because I feel that has been abandoned in modern music (and I suck at drums). I had such a hard time mixing this song (I have a hard time mixing any song at the moment). I have about 20 different "mixdowns" and the one I ended up posting was mixed in an hour on bunk headphones in a car going 75 mph with the windows down all while trying to beat the deadline :/...And I was just informed I didn't make it before the deadline, sad day :(
