isn't ripping your vinyl-only release to another format technically illegal?

Not anymore! Or maybe it still is for the moment.

I know they were changing it, so that if you own the release in one format, you can legally back it up in any other format.

I ripped my tmsv refix of dem a talk to digital so I could listen to it on my ipod on car trips, I don't really see a problem with that...I'm not putting it on the internet or anything

If it is illegal then no one pays attention to it, I certainly don't. As an example I can think of a certain big name DJ who regularly drops old white label grime releases on Serato and no one gives a shit. In principle it's no different to ripping a CD you've bought to digital but it's not as straightforward which is why free digital copy with vinyl purchases would be beneficial.

Yeah big up Jesus for dying for our sins and netting us a public holiday in the process.

Also, hot cross buns.

yeah i know no one pays attention to it but it's something to take into account re. the download codes thing... i.e. people expecting download codes does play into an idea about what you're doing when you pay for music which has been false for a long time. obvs though conceptions are changing which download codes play into

No, I'm fairly certain that it's not illegal at all in the United States. Not sure about the United Kingdom though.

we're allowed to back up our own property, we're not allowed to wrongfully distribute

i mean if they were to somehow attempt to enforce no-backing-up as a form of copyright protection, no one would stand for it. too intrusive
