Removing Piano from sample

Post by djfeloe » Wed Sep 05, 2012 3:48 am

So i got this sample from a film. It's a lady speaking but in the background is a piano and i'm going crazy trying to eq the piano out of the sample or make it less noticeable. Can anyone share some knowledge as to how to get rid of or at least make the piano a little less noticeable??

Thanks DSF!

I almost want to agree. However.... somehow I don't agree.

After all, if burial can do it (even though he is good :D) Why can't we? So lets all do some brainstorming! Sound engineers might want to be directed to this thread ;-)

according to the specturm analyzer chart made by truth you might be able to clutter it to kind of mask the sound.

Pianos are string-like in ways when synthesized, not like cymbals and such' so they won't go through no matter what. As a normal ranged piano, we're talking about making it into cluttered noise when trying to mask or take it out of things'

What types of instruments are played in the sample aside from the piano? Is this just vocals? Try to be specific. Piano is most heard at 220hz to 440hz in C. If attempted to be brought up to ultra high frequencies and masked over something else it might just work at 10k to 20k..if I understand this shit correctly. Avoid the full range of the piano and the normal range. Try the ext range's

(Correct me if I'm completely wrong please!)

Figured as much.

Time to look through credible sources of google.

Meanwhile...Ideas on how and what are you trying to take the piano sound out of sample wise..it'd be good to know.

This post probably wont' have too much affect but it sure as hell gives a good understanding of the piano

the only method I've had limited success with is making it mono

Could try asking on gearslutz if you have an account there. That's always a decent site to rely on.

http://www.ehow.com/how_7783211_remove- ... songs.html

Also one for midi's just in case..I'll see if I can find one for wav's

http://sg.answers.yahoo.com/question/in ... 450AAv4yyY

And way less credible but here's a basic idea.

For the sake of clutter reference and not reposting. They were talking about how to remove sound from song formats such as the deep hammer sound a piano gets. Similar concept. I figured someone on there might know. Also mentioned Cedar...gonna go check out what that's all about.

Keep messing around with the hz in mono sound. I'll keep checking for something else.

I'll see if I can pull up something over here. Sorry I'm not too much help. but you hear the idea. Use a sound editor or something to break it into pieces. or EQ in the HZ to completely remove it or dull it through volume.

Also for the more negative outlook of things.

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/26 ... 0&tstart=0

Those are basically the only bits of information I could find on it :u:

Personally the only uses I see would be to

A. Find a new sample
B. Mask it insanely well/melodyne/edison
C. Break it down which would take forever.
D. lose a crapload of quality of the other stuff too. Viable option for a simple deep dubstep tune.

Other than that. You're kinda of out of luck. Pick an approach 8) No simple way.

K I'm done searching, if anyone finds anyhthing better shoot me a pm. I'm interested to learn it anyway

Has anyone tried using Roland r-mix? I've always wondered if it works or not.

Yo thanks for the feedback sorry i took a while to reply i was busy with school work and the girlfriend... but the sample is from a a film and it just has ambience and a piano playin in the background along with the woman speaking. i am trying to get rid of the piano because it doesn't fit well with the track.... the piano is too noticeable ..

quite a tedious task i must say :u:
heres a link to the sample...

well youre pretty much fucked BUT it's not impossible since its just ambience. Your best bet is to find a way to pan the piano seperate from the vocals use some EQ and louden the vocals and ambient, lower the piano on mono with hz. Melody e will work but if youre looking for top of the line productions youre never going to br able to get it less you know the producer. Also im typin this while on a road trip to colarado denver so scuse my typing

You could try splitting it to m/s (mid/side) and dropping out the side, bandpass the sample and run a compressor/expander in expander mode and maybe gate it, also work out the key of the sample and retune it to something thats compatible with the tune.
Some dance to remember, some dance to forget.
