you guys are absurd. You see movies about killing people, likely on a weekly basis, probably watch a law and order tv show a few times a month with people getting fucked up the ass with vegetables.... but hold the phone. This one is based on a true story pump the fucking brakes.

Peoples self justifying sense of morality is so shit.

They're telling a story. If you don't want to hear this story, do not watch it. You can go back to rape and murder shit of your own free will. You know, quality entertainment ?

^ i don't do either of those things ftr

yeah when it's a true story and there are actual victims about whom people are making an actual movie that is about them, yeah it is different. i don't know how they feel about it but there we go. people getting uncomfortable because a movie directly exploiting the trauma of specific individuals is getting made while the [media] wound is still fresh? woooo yeah so hypocritical oooh awful.

I really don't care if they make a movie about it or not. I'll probably see it if they do. I was just pointing out how big of a douche Paterno was.

that's really no more than you'd expect though isn't it? like, if you are going to use it in a movie to make money, at least portray it in the only morally tenable manner possible, yeah?

in theory, it could be a good movie which fully justified the decision to use this subject matter ... unlikely, though, given (a) most movies are shit and (b) the timing suggests they're cashing in on the current publicity ... if it is shite, it would be fair to ask: why not make your shite movie about something that doesn't further upset the victims?

villifying paterno wouldn't by itself justify the movie ...

if its a good writer they'll play both sides of it. Here are two undeniable facts

1) In 50+ years of coaching, Joe Paterno shaped the lives of tens of thousands of men. He helped them develop personal strengths and leadership like no other coach in the history of NCAA organized sports. There are generations of families who will be positively effected by the actions of Joe Paterno

2) Joe Paterno participated in the coverup of a horrendous pedaphile in order to keep his football program running. His ignorance and lack of action likely enabled many more men to be assaulted while Sandusky should have been in prison. There are generations of families who will be negatively effected by the actions of Joe Paterno.

if you can't see how that screams hollywood I'm not sure about your knowledge of film. It likely wouldnt be a huge blockbuster but in the same vein as the Dr Death movie it could be an award winning story on hbo or showtime or something.

edit: fuck they could do an entire movie following 2 families... one victim and one football player and show the difference joe paterno made in each of their lives 20 years down the line. This could be geniously done

when did i say the movie didn't scream hollywood? what, morally questionable, exploitative moviemaking doesn't scream hollywood to you?

if the movie is not written like (2) is bad, then it's not morally tenable.

and to be perfectly honest, the "great men who do abusive things are still great men" (i.e. well, (2), but (1)! but (1)) thing is such a deeply culturally embedded trope that I would expect a really "good writer" to not act like this is some new territory where society has never gone before.

the great actions of abusers and abuse enablers are all we ever goddamn hear. i'd like to see a movie taking them the whole way down for once.

wow, like, fucking, EW.

a whole movie with a victim of abuse that a guy could have prevented being compared to a guy that joe paterno did great awesome things for? are you actually fucking kidding me? lmao, i really can't think of a more insulting way you could make a movie about this

I think you lack imagination.

Stephen Gaghan for example could make the perfect script for this movie and make it interesting... or Paul Haggis for example I think could do a fantastic job with that story.

You're thinking too linear and are thinking about seeing a movie that is like what you saw on fox news or bbc or whatever. That would be a very boring story.

I think this would be brilliant. Or at least have a chance to be.

I really enjoyed Moneyball even though I don't know anything about baseball. There was a witty end to this post but I've forgotten it.

Agree with this. He was trying to save people from pain. What a terrible person.

would you agree that Kevorkian was villainized when he became popular? Namely being sentenced to prison multiple times and being given the nickname Dr Death?

Whether YOU personally supported him or not he was made to be a villain. This is an undeniable fact.
