I find people's negative attitude towards white people making and playing their own version of 'trap', atrocious and racist.

Stating that white "hipster" people making this music is inappropriate, and that they shouldn't touch things they don't understand (or are unfamiliar with because they didn't grow up in the 'hood' in atlanta) is shocking to me, really. Music is music, and if we're open to influences from multiple cultures, the only result can be a positive amalgamation of musical diversity.

Stating that a culture's music is only relevant in the context of that culture is narrow-minded, and if we want music to flourish, then we need to move beyond the idea that musical ideas are only 'legit' if someone has proven themselves to some self-important underground culture. Where were all these people hating on moombahton? I mean, were people mad that the originators took a rhythmic idea from caribbean culture and applied it to dance music? Should I, as a white male in the states, be chastised for writing a track with 6/8 rumba clave?

If we really wanted to go there, then we should be angry at music producers for using the same chord progressions that composers from the baroque era used, unless, of course, they've mastered music theory and written a fugue.

some people need to chill out, music is music, and some of us have been fans of southern hip hop since the 90s.

Completely misunderstood my entire point.

If you want to make southern hip hop make southern hip hop

don't bastardize it and act like you made a new genre..... the only difference between trap and southern hip hop is who is making it. THAT I have a HUGE fucking problem with. Nothing new musically has brought to the table. A group of people took an existing genre and called it something new because now they're making it instead of those "other people".

Yet its just as formulaic
I'd rather listen to formulaic 808s than formulaic obnoxious wubs any day though.

That's like saying "I'd rather get my dick slammed in a car door instead of a blender" when there is the third option of "I'd like neither"

I realize everyone feels the need to be on the bleeding edge of music and whatever the new genre is but sometimes the newest thing is simply shit and it's simply OK to go buy a deep house record or pick up a plain ol hip hop album. Granted you won't have anything to show off on your facebook feed but your musical dignity will remain in tact

I'm not saying I'm going out to buy the latest "trapstep" remix or anything, but I know this shit is gonna get forced onto me eventually and I'm just grateful that on average, it's better than Nottingham's up and coming produces. Plus, you almost have to try to make an 808 sound bad.

No-one's acting like it's a new genre, it's being getting called trap for years. Most people making/listening to this will remember Soulja Boy

I think if they just did what they did when all the Chicago footwork guys was getting pissed off at Addison Groove/Distal etc... and called it Trap-influenced EDM like how they call that Juke-influenced dubstep that would be better
