I used to wonder this myself about spirits... then I spent a couple of evenings in the Buena Vista trying different rums and a night in York tasking whiskies... I'm actually kind of amazed with how much difference there is, especially with whiskies - the peat thing really adds a whole new dimension! Maybe my tastebuds have just been desensitised enough from years of necking neat rum that the alcohol doesn't overpower everything anymore...

This, definitely! Did you try Żołądkowa Gorzka, herbal vodka from east Poland? Also, any home made fruity vodka - my grandma makes cherry, strawberry, blueberry - all damn tasty. Even with the clear ones there's loads of difference. Haven't drank shots for ages, but the last time I did, we had some Lithuanian vodka from the nearby shop and it was damn nice, smooth, velvety and easy on the throat. And beautiful looking as well, with an ear of grain inside the bottle!
