FAVORITE WAVEFORM/OSCILLATOR CONFIGURATION (MASSIVE)

Whats your favorite stack of waveforms for Massive?

Thought it would be good for everyone because (at least for me) most of my guess and check work is done when trying to find a good combination of oscillator configurations to build my sound off of. I end up spending a lot of time trying to find good settings. Once I have solid ground to work from, I am then able to build a sound without to much trial and error.

Please try to give as much information as possible,

-Octave your playing at
-Sound your trying to achieve (lead synth, bass, fx, ect)
-Waveform and filter mode (formant, spectrum, bend+/-)
-Estimated amp level ( 1/2, 3/4, full)
-Any pitch changes to the individual oscillators

Some settings i like are:

C0-C1
Mid range bass, deep wobble
Roughmath 1/spectrum/+12/Amp %80
Multiplex/spectrum/0/Amp full
Escalation 1/spectrum/0/Amp %80

C0-C1
Reese Bass
Square-saw|polysaw/spectrum/ + .15-.55 /Amp 90%-full
Square-saw|polysaw/spectrum/ - .15-.55 /Amp 90%-full
Escalation 1/spectrum/ +12 /Amp 40%-70%

Try to follow the guidelines. Anything suggested I will try out myself, so any and all input is appreciated.

massive has a ton of waveforms that are just heavily distorted saw waves, look for those when making reeses for that extra digital sharp sound. if you want warmer saw waves, absynth is your synth.

I use Massive for bass type sounds sometimes, but I mostly like using it for modulated synths and pads.
So no surprise I prefer the 'FX/Chords', especially the ones named Colors and Melancholia. Camchord is nice too...

-Octave you're playing at: Varies, Usually a G minor or some F minor, sometimes sharps
-Sound you're trying to achieve (lead synth, bass, fx, ect): Pads, organ stabs, synth chords
-Waveform and filter mode (formant, spectrum, bend+/-): Usually Spectrum, filter modes always vary
-Estimated amp level ( 1/2, 3/4, full): Varies, usually modulated
-Any pitch changes to the individual oscillators: Same as above

Nice, yeah massive is great for evolving pads. I love taking an envelope and putting it on wavetables, filters, ect to change the sound completely over time.

I like the FX waveforms mentioned. I tend to over look analog waveforms the most.

Not sure what you mean by octave, I just play the sweet spots and assign which ever elements to it but
I tend to use a combination of bandreject and the scream filter with a ton of bend+ and bend -, I macro the hell out of them to create a multisynth, I believe I can make up to 4 seperate sounds in on instance if you do it properly and make use of the macros

instead of using huge envelopes, try uni directional lfos and you have living drones

Hey guys/gals

I'm pretty decent at resampling and throwing on effects to get really big sounds but where my sound design knowledge lacks is knowing what wavetables or wavetable combinations to use when I'm starting a sound in Massive (specifically for bass sounds). I'm not looking for a specific sound I'm just curious what everyones go to wavetables and effects are in Massive for some of your sounds.

2. This is only going to teach you what others favorite wavetables are. To really learn about the wavetables in Massive you need experiment yourself, and see what you like.

If you like resampling, try challenging yourself by starting with basic waveforms that any synth can do. That way you have the skills for creating effects chains that work with any synth.
You say your sound design is lacking at its core. Find what you think sounds good to begin with and start from there.
If you have a midi controller, assign the wavetable position to a knob and mess around while you play notes and click through the different wavetables and you'll find out quickly which ones YOU like best. If you don't have a midi controller, set up a loop of notes and assign the wavetable position to an lfo and click through the wavetables.
....because if I tell you I like one osc of carbon at the 12 o clock position tuned to 0, a second carbon at 12 o clock tuned to 1+ semi tone, and a third carbon at 12 o clock tuned to 2+ with hardclipper turned all the way up....that's my opinion.

It is good to have a starting point. I guess its good to dig around too but sometimes you might overlook a wavetable because you did not know about the possibilities within the oscillator (WT modulation, intensity, ect)

You might say its better to figure it out yourself, but in certain situations it is just tedious, especially if your in the zone and trying to get a track moving. It is just the basis of your sound, the after processing is what makes your sound "yours", just like samples.

It is like saying search through a million sample packs teaches you more then getting one great sample pack with samples you already had in mind right in front of you. Yes, when searching through the samples you may find something that you wouldn't normally use, and it might turn out better but i feel that it hinders your creative workflow.
