Using EQ modulation to achieve talking bass

Post by Demsoun » Wed Oct 03, 2012 11:46 am

Hi guys, so i have spent alot of time reading into EQ modulation to make talking basses (not just growls) and i was wondering if there is any decent tutroials of this or if anyone could explain in a simple way of how to manipulate an EQ to achieve these formanted sounds (and i dont mean just use a notch filter in massive)?

Many thanks in advance.

Its all about using EQ's that simulate vowel movement, and/or use filter modulation and bit crushing.

There's heap's of stuff on "the official growl bass thread", took me ages to explore it all. But bassicaly what you want is an EQ with a spike 3500hz (you dont modulate this). Then you want a big dip at 500hz and a big spike at about 250hz, I was modulating these two to get the basis of the "talking" bass. I added a couple more small spikes and dips to give more interest to the sound but the first two by themselves should do the trick.
