Haha no idea, had it for like 10 years and I tried to find out what it was a long time ago and tektite is what a couple of people had told me. I just thought it was some kind of volcanic glass, but never really tested it as apparently it would require being melted down (or a piece of it). I mentioned rectangular because that seems like it would be much easier to carve/shape than something round or flat. It's in storage, I'll get a pic next time I'm there digging through my vinyl.

I wouldn't suggest smoking off - or heating in general - any sort of substance that you are unsure of...

To use it as a handle would be fine - but you're still gonna need lapidary...

or take it to a glass studio - they could slump it into a nice handle shape or work it around a tube, into a base or something
They might tell you no also - because of the unknown - possible lead content - arsenic

We are taught not to touch any base metal which is basically every piece of costume jewelry in the world plus bronze and plated silver.
Even A lot of the super shiny sterling in the shops has been chrome plated...It's still considered .925 but it's impossible to restore the finish
