one thing i know, is that someday my kids are getting fucking piano lessons.
^ i hear that man i wish my parents got me into music.
lol i guess my parents did it right! and I always gripe about them not getting me into sports at an early age! (try to play lacrosse, but I'm terrible--> and karting/ race car driving is my absolute dream (besides being a musician... MAYBE I CAN DO BOTH :dunce: )
I've been playing piano for 11 years (since I was 5), and one of my parents' good friends is an amazing teacher (didn't learn from him, but my mom worked with him for a bit) He's got some books which IMHO are good.

This is primarily theory, with a bit of keyboard learning mixed in--> http://paulsheftel.com/?page_id=1171
This is the companion book to the above one, with a focus on keyboard skills-->http://paulsheftel.com/?page_id=2056
the 2nd one might be a bit too hard, idk (b/c I don't have the book with me and I haven't laid eyes on it in years) , but I'm sure amazon will let you return them if you so please.)
Can't really help you with ear training right now, but shoot me a PM and I'll ask my mom or Paul or both what they think the best way to learn is. BTW the track in your sig is schweet so I don't think you should worry so much.

Good luck!

Luigi

Lemme know if you have questions.
^^ I know this guy can play! Very cool blog, you guys should check it out.

I studied on the upright bass, and my jazz teacher used to tell us to learn the circle of 5th's going from the left, the direction of the flats, because this is way of Dominant chord cadences. V resolving to I. Then start learning all of the scales (modes) in each key as you move through the cycle.

I'm not going to lie, its going to take practice (years). You can go as deep as you wanna, or you can just scratch the surface.

learn an instrument. guitar is probably the easiest to teach to yourself. once you can play a bit the theory you're reading will start to make sense.

DON'T JUST READ, you won't learn anything. or, maybe you will, but it will take a lot longer and it will be a lot less fun.
to shreds, you say...

^ This. Don't read anything...don't learn notes, unless it's just for memorization via Piano Roll.

Just pick up a guitar and start making melodies, mess with the piano, play drums.

And listen to a shitttttttttttttttttt tonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn of music of all genres.

Then you will be busting out melodies out your ass in no time!

I only ever make shit in Fm, and like maybe D#m and F#m, so there's not much to learn.

As for chord progressions I'm screwed.
You don't have to remember every scale to know what notes are in what scales.
1. Get out a keyboard or look one up.
2. choose a note(this will be the root note of the major key)
3. move up T-T-S-T-T-T-S (tones and semitones)(same pattern as starting on C and playing all white notes till the next C)
4. tada you now know what notes are in that key, not rocket science

Additional reading: Each key found this way is major, for one of the other modes or scales(such as minor) of that key play through the notes you found but start on a different key than the root one.

This is the 0.6 version of the Ravenspiral guide, it's not easy to find online, and it has all you need in music theory.
Helped me heaps, and a great read!
