Responding to feedback:
wewuk:
You're talking about the chords in some parts of the intro, right? Yep, those are not entirely the way they are supposed to be, since i was trying out different melodies and progressions a lot so it's not quite there yet... haven't had the time to continue working on it yet unfortunately.

@SMOR3S: heard this track so many times haha, nice ambience you've added the bells sound better now, the mix sounds good. Overall sounds quite cool, not sure what else to suggest - seems like you've almost finished this one.![]()
@oprs: Nice intro, ambience is good. I like the bass stabs and the build. Drop is good, nice powerful track and the drums come through well - mix sounds clean. Not sure what to suggest, sounds great aready![]()
@Houston Weather: A strange one, may turn out nice with a few more hours or it may just be meh haha. Overall I'm not feeling the drums, but the synths are nice enough. Perhaps play with it some more on a fresh set of ears - if it sounds lame to you then give it up but like I said the pads are nice, could work into a nice chilled track![]()
Hey guys, working on an intro for my new EP, mix is messy and some FX need their panning/levels sorting but yeah:

Re: WIPs/unfinished tunes for feedback * no finished tunes *
@oprs: sounds are great, love the intro, I like the snare, how it sounds really distant and hollow. the first build up kinda threw me of my feet. I expected the drop then, actually nicely don.e the two mettalic snare between the first build up in the intro and the drop I don't feel, they don't feel like the add anything to the intro.
I love the off rythm use of the open hats in the main part. the synth is verey well done it doesn't feel like it's doesn't belong in the track. the part after the second drop, I don't really like, it sounds kinda strange, do feel the water sounds in there tho. it's the stabs I don't really like, the sound of them, a bit harsh. also a lil bit of extra percussion like bongo's and stuff would fit nicely I think.
it's a really industrial dark vibe you got going here and I like it.
@houston weather: you mean that lilttle 'moan/breath in the background" I made it with a synth, if you like it I can send it to you.
feedback: the snare/is really dry and lacking body, give it a bit of reverb/delay. I like the synth stabs in there, the sound like they're going backwards which is really nice. I feel the pad is a lil bit too loud in comparison to the rest of the track. the clap is also really soft, could be made a bit harder. the open hat sounds like it's a bit too short without tail, not really feeling that.
I do like the sound progression of the song.
@mthrfnk: the build up is agreat, I really do expect a really hard track after this one, the sounds are really big, the reverbs really gives this a big feeling. love the use of the choir in there. it all sounds really lush, so that's why they snare is really boring compared to the rest of the sounds. it sounds really standard and really doesn't fit the whole 'epicness' of the rest of the intro. but all in all, really well done.
@reversed: yup that's what I meant.

np haha i just tried to go the k pop route maybe i went overboard. maybe i should try to make maria ozawa into audio and not bree olsonKlesherdubs wrote:@jimbeaux : we do that on purpose silly !more feedbackk, were not hurting anyone, you can post multiple times too if you like.. just a propaganda technique,,,
as for feedback its no biggyy..... damn
@oprs: thanks will do...
your track, I was feeling the intro, real smooth and dark, I like it.. I really like it !. hahah reminds me of VIVEK, now this is just me.. but your intro feels too long, not a bad thing, but the way it set into the riser around 28 makes you ready for that drop.. Im sure you made it purposely like that for suspense for the next drop right![]()
its a good idea, but I think shortening would be much better.. the kick, Im guessing is what it is after 28 ?.. its really unnecessary.. and beef it up !, its too pussy(cat)
we dogs, were dark, we want beef ! hahah.. open the low end up more, the snare rim sample and the beginning would sound better not being theree... the main section is nice... the sounds you use are nice and dark !(: lovee dark... but the snare, isn't feeling dark... like the track's progression plays out and sets,
work on the percussion section having more movement, and everything light, take out, or pitch dark, space it out more to, ! ha.. don't have the percussion jumbled up,
we feeling a deep track, open it up and put some reverb, make it dungeon like ! ha, the second section with the mixup is nice, but the perc is still sounding happy..
the everything about the track is good.. but we want great, so main focuses:
1. Beef up the Kick
2. Darken and open the percussion, give room and depth to it
3. most importantly boost that low end ! wanna feel the bass in my face ! great work though mate, at it n out![]()
@BudSpencertron: I feel like either your new, or your not putting as much as you can into the track itself.. the idea is there, but most of the sounds are dry and unoriginal.. the perc is nice but gets hella repetitive quick.. the main wobble doesn't seem to blend.. but yet sit on top of the track like a nasty pimple.. its just a pest..
I don't mean to be harsh, just the truth, or how I feel.. but I'm doing this to help you get better !.. so don't feel insulted.. anyone who says otherwise, doesn't have an ear for music, or is purely lieing on a friend level because they don't want to offend you.. but, the base is good, which is something most people don't have, by base I mean
percussion section.. people tend to forget that, or just mimic the same sound over and over.. you just copied a pattern/rhythm.. nothing wrong with that to learn the basics..
just focus on getting some rhythm in your drums, thats most of importance,
watch some hip hop video tutorials to get an idea.. wanna feel the sway and movement in the tune
your idea for the wobble is good.. but the wobble is just everywhere, it needs to have a standard foundation, being precise.. not necessarily predictable
but suitable and easy on the ears.. enjoyable to where its ok if the same pattern repeats.. its a good pattern, the wobble sound though, oh its good
maybe some effects to give it a more character.. and focus on making a track blend.. making the sounds MIX as if there suppose to be together.. no other way would sound better.. you get what Im going at ? Better yet.. MAKE ELEMENTS NOT SOUNDS , elements blend in an essence of natural music.. haha I know its a lot to take in but consider it, you've got potential bruv.. ! keep at it !

epic vocal sample
I'd make that E piano hit in the intro a bit more interesting by adding a different hit in front of it, laying emphasis on that one hit, for example, g->e, but putting the velocity lower. might make it sound even more epic
the first chord progression sounds a bit generic imo. it's your choice though.
make the hats louder ofc :p
try adding cello, works great with string section usually.
I'd put a bit more detail into the intro, and make the transition from intro to drop smoother, with some kind of delay / reverb or something like that.oprs wrote:http://soundcloud.com/seven3/untitled
Dope as hell. I'd put the synth a bit more forward (compression / distortion, just a little) and a bit more stereo image work would be appropriate i guessBudSpencertron wrote:http://soundcloud.com/unimoglordofthefa ... -2-aka-neo

Reversed, the mixing sounds clean & i dig the intro strings/deep synth near the end, a lot. good stuff
Houston Weatherg, the drums are chill, the whole track feels kinda raw/empty but u might be going for that deeeep sound. still feeling it
BudSpencertron, you got yourself a fat wub there. good beat & the rapping is dope too. mixing is edgy, but it sounds like grime/hiphop anyways
I sampled one of those, crank-up music boxes for this bitn

mthrfnk- Sucker for rain samples and female vocals so the intro is already giving me the tingles. The orchestral sounding part is perfect. The percussion seems a little slow in the intro, maybe speed it up or take it out? The build is proper nice, the snare sounds really weak to me though, the string fit perfectly for sure. The bass just seems like the strongest thing and a proper mixdown may sort this out, but that snare lacking power is killing it.
Reversed- I love the japanese feel the intro carries, the use of percussion is great. The piano effects seem a little much and the kick is super low. I love how dismantled the actual drop is, creates a great space.
Abide- Needs some sorting out in the volume region, The snare seems super far back. kick has some power, i like the delay on the synth at 45 for sure, i think the kick build if your gonna go that route is a little to short imo.

I dont usually make something so up beat but fuck it. I came in with a different mind set.

i love the strings and the instrumentation. When the drums kick in it feels like there needs to be some more impact, maybe filter some freqs out beofre they hit? As ytou said the mix is messy so the drums aren't quite cutting through yet.
Reversed
Those plucks stick out a little in the beginning (although i really like em). Maybe try some delay on them? The piano is sweet. When the bass kicks in I feel the other elements are trying to remain a tad too dominant. May shorter notes with long reverbs and let the sub and percussion / drums take centre stage a little more.
oprs
Do you have some mad sidechaining or something going on? The whole thing feels like it has a gate on it where as if it was a little more straight up I think it'd have more power etc..
Ok.. been working on one I submitted a few pages ago. What I want to sort out is the bass. I want that low end to be pushing through the speakers KOAN sound style. All I have to work with is audio as I've chopped up, chopped to midi, frozen etc... more times that I care to think about. Anyone have any ideas of effects / processing chains I could use on the bassline to get it really thumping through the low end? I'm guessing were talking 100 - 300ish hz. That frequency range has always been my weak point.
I suppose this would be a good example of the kind of low end im looking at (although im not a huge fan of the tune). Anyone know how I could get that effect http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PDGJeUs3Dns&feature=plcp (0.37 onwards).
Cheers guys.

@Burgeamon - if you want to have a bigger low end, try frequency splitting. that way you can boost the low end without changing the higher timbre
@oprs - pretty nice track, but i think it sound a little bit muddy. maybe some frequency are overlapping?
@Abide - i think your snare could use some work, the sound is bugging me. Maybe try some snare layering or some eq'ing
Hey here is my WIP. im combining my two favorite genera to show my love for both music. gonna warn y'all though, this is really in the alpha stage. did this in like an hour or two, just wanted something so i can pitch this to some friends

@ thelastthing - sounds pretty good considering its thrash metal mixed in. I think you need to bring the drums up a little, i can't really hear them that well over the the rest, maybe try boosting the KD's at 100hz
@burgermon, i really like the track but i really don't like the snare drum you're using, think it would sound better with a bit more crash to it
@Abide, sounds awesome for an intro, i was just waiting for it to drop then it finished ;-(
Really wanted to hear some snarling bass sounds to counteract the happy hippy intro.
Here's my Wip, been messing around with this track for a while and i keep adding shit everytime i play it.
Any comments would be a great help... also would like to know what it sounds like on a big rig (neighbours doin my head in)

Re: WIPs/unfinished tunes for feedback * no finished tunes *
@thelastthing: Cool concept. Drums need some beefing up somehow. I get that you wanted to stick with the metal feel of the drums, but I definitely would like them more if you added a punchy layer to the snare and the kicks. Or at least turned them up a bit. I'm not hearing much, if any sub bass. Try layering a pure sine wave under your bass sounds. I like the creativity though, keep it up!
@Burgeamon: Your kicks and snares absolutely crush man! Mix sounds pretty good. I'd like to hear the crashes a little louder at the beginnings of the phrases, maybe layer some downsweeps in there too just to fill it out. I think that your sub layer could match up with the mid bass line a bit more, granted I'm listening on pretty shit headphones. But I think it would sound funkier if the sub just followed your crunchy mid more. All in all sounding pretty sick, and I've got mad snare envy right now...
@vader340mk2: Not really my style, but its sounding pretty good. I'm hearing some some sub bass presence in that little arp line right before the first drop, I think if you eq that out it would make the drop sound bigger and fuller. The subby synth at the beginning sounds a bit cheese to me. I'd say either get rid of it, or distort it more so it sounds less plastic. I like the drums, particularly your snare/clap.
Here's mine. I made it about 4 days ago. Its not a banger, and its kind of weird. I mostly want to know if you guys think this concept has any potential. Thanks!

Re: WIPs/unfinished tunes for feedback * no finished tunes *
@NorCoDubstep Love the vocal snippets at the beginning but I think they're a little too up front in the mix. Maybe give them a tiny bit more reverb? The drop at 1:14 is SICK. Really well done - love the midrange bass patch and water droplets. The drum rolls and transition effects are spot on. The mix sounds super clear and well-defined. I wish I could give you more feedback, but this is a really impressive track man. Kept me interested the whole way through. I kinda don't like how it ends, but I suppose that's something you could always easily fix. Maybe just a standard fade-out with just the drums and lead synth? Otherwise, great job, and keep it up.
@Vader340mk2 Really heavy track - the drums sound great, especially your snare. I think for the second half of the drop (ie 1:25 onwards) you need to add some sort of variation other than just rhythmic changes in your bassline. Perhaps change the melodic pattern a bit, even if it's just a slight interval change. Or add a different style of synth all together. As I said to NorCoDubstep, I don't really like the way the track ends, but that's always an easy change if you decide to end the song differently. I don't really like the clap that you use during the intro either. I get that you want the drop to be more intense and heavy than the intro, but the clap that you use in the intro is just too flat, in my opinion. Otherwise, this track is a banger man. Props.
@thelastthing I think the idea is really creative and original. But I think there is way too much high end presence in this track, and not enough subbass (as NorCo suggested). The drums are also sounding pretty dead, so I think you either need to pick some better samples, increase the volume of your drums, or work on the mixdown a bit (maybe try sidechaining some elements to your kick and/or snare). For a WIP though, this is really cool. I'm a huge metal head myself, so I enjoyed this a lot =) Looking forward to hearing some more metalstep(?) songs from you haha
Here's my WIP, hope you enjoy:

norcodubstep: awesome vibes man! only criticism i have is maybe make the drums a tad bit more punchy? parallel compression?
almostskate: nice song! perhaps touch up the percussion? feels robotic and a bit broken, unless thats the vibe you were going for?
vader: track seems like its lacking a lot of weight. more specifically, sub bass seems a tad weak.
heres a loop i made in operations management class today. should i build on it or trash it is all im after. i made it using iphone headphones so please no mixing comments.

@Eat Bass - if all you want is an opinion than yeah, you should use that loop. you could always cut it up, glitch it, and resample it if you personally don't find it too good
@almostskate100 - liked the track, very chill. main thing i would say is maybe try to process your snare a little bit more, give it a little bit more life to it
@NorCoDubstep - wow really digging this, like the whole fusion, funk, jazz, dubstep combo you got going on. only thing i would say is maybe do something about that vocal/choir thing in the last half, sounds a little bit to cheesy haha
well im back with a new WIP. made this real quick like an hour or two since people like the concept of metalstep, however this is dubcore (more dubstep than metal imo lolz
) and i already know this need a lot of processing, eq'ing, yadda yadda etc. etc. but what i want is your opinion on this concept and how to better fuse the two style. i want to do what Pretty Light did with "Wayfaring Stranger" and how he blended country and electronic music so seamlessly through out the song, since most people only have sections of different genera in their songs, you know? that may be a little much to ask for but good opinions are priceless so i appreciate any help cheers!

Its hard to hear whats going on, it all sounds a little too squashed (I'm guessing some mastering plugin or something) so there's no real clarity in any of the elements. Its sounds like it has some good momentum tho and the arrangement seems good but its just all crushed up so isn't being given its change to shine.
thelastthing
Lacking some dynamics as that bass blast is constant. maybe just use that after the main drop and do something with some percussion before to build into it. Could be really cool.
Eat Bass
That low bass is wicked bro. Finish that tune main and I'd love a copy. Disgusting!
Almostskate
I'm a sucker for those pad / distant organy type sounds. Very Joy Orbison-esque. Sub is luscious. Im not totally sold on the snare BUT thats more a preference thing. The distant perc / hats are sweet. Nice joy!
NorCoDubstep
This is sweet. The low fi intro is great. From .46 till the drop i feel it needs another instrument to build up to the drop as its a bit loopy. Love the way you switch up the beat.
Ok.. this is just an update on the track. The bass was a little thin so I started it again, reprocessed it and resampled it with a sub that follows the same pattern. I then chopped the audio to midi and started glitching it up a bit. My one concern is the width. Its nice and wide but the second its played in mono the bass falls apart. It'll probably never get played on a mono system so should I even care at this point?

I'm a sucker for those pad / distant organy type sounds. Very Joy Orbison-esque. Sub is luscious. Im not totally sold on the snare BUT thats more a preference thing. The distant perc / hats are sweet. Nice joy!

@Burgeamon I Love that snappy snare, anyway you should give some more variations to bass, am I right?
Anyway sounds nicely processed. any hints on how you did that

Oh yeah, ive not gone through the variations yet.
Basically.. layered a sub + low bass + top bass. Distortion / EQ / Compression. Bounce to audio. Audio to midi in ableton and chopped things up. For the width there are 2 of the same bass hard panned either side with 1 side 3ms behind the other. (High passed at 200 with a third version in mono low passed at 200).
